DIY chain collar. How to choose the main accessory for your pet - a collar? Required materials and tools

Homemade collars for four-legged pets are becoming more and more popular every year.

This is due to the possibility of getting inexpensive but very stylish an accessory that will fully meet all the wishes of the dog owner.

The choice of models for dogs today is almost unlimited and makes it easy to choose accessories of any size, a variety of shades, all kinds of shapes and several decor options.

However, if you want to get original and personalized collar, you can make simple, effective and reliable designs yourself.

Regardless of the manufacturing method and material, you need to remember that for medium-sized animals and large breeds of dogs, only metal fittings are used. All lobster clasps, buckles, and rings or half-rings must be soldered or cast. It is enough to purchase plastic fittings or fasteners made of thin steel.

Sewn collar

The most wear-resistant and safe, from the point of view of operation, is the option made on the basis of nylon tape.

In this case, it is recommended to take a closer look at the textile sling, which successfully combines strength and durability, as well as designed for prolonged negative impact of external factors and high load levels.

Such material can have different colors, and if necessary, it is decorated with velvet, water-repellent tape, artistic braid or reflective types of fabric.

Attention! For more comfortable use, the inner lining is made of fleece or any other soft fabric that prevents strong friction against the dog's fur and skin.

Step by step execution:

  • correctly calculate the circumference of the accessory by measuring the circumference of the dog’s neck and multiply the results by 1.75;
  • attach finishing tape to the sling, stitching it on the right side, left side and along the edges using a sewing machine;
  • sew an internal lining made of soft, wear-resistant fabric;
  • sew on a plastic fastex fastener and a plastic double-slit buckle, as well as a half-ring, which will serve as a fixation for the collar.

Caring for homemade nylon collars is completely simple and consists of periodic hand washing and drying at room temperature.

Knitted collar

For lovers of crocheting or knitting, the best option would be creating an original knitted collar from leftover yarn.

The most convenient and fastest is considered to be crocheting in the transverse direction from yarn with the addition of strong polyamide thread:

  • knitting an initial chain 30-50 mm long based on air loops;
  • at the beginning of the row, perform a lifting chain loop;
  • the strip is knitted to a length that is equal to the circumference of the pet’s neck with the addition of 15 cm for wearing comfort and fastener fixation;
  • upon completion of the design, one loop is decreased on both sides in the last three rows.

A decorative buckle is attached to the end. To prevent the collar from rubbing the animal's neck, it is recommended to hem a flannel lining on the reverse side. When the product gets dirty, wash it by hand in warm water. with laundry soap or in the washing machine on the “wool” program.

Attention! To get the most reliable and aesthetic accessory, you need to tie the collar in a circular row of single crochets, and then in a circular row of single crochets, knitted from left to right.

Paracord collar

Paracord is a lightweight nylon rope with a special core. Initially, this material was used in the line system of parachutes, but is now widely used as a universal cable.

Collar made of paracord characterized by low weight, high density and excellent strength. This accessory does not fade, does not deform and looks very attractive.

For weaving you will need: a couple of pieces of paracord up to 50 cm long, a half ring and a standard fastener:

  • fold the pieces in half and thread them through the clasp;
  • make loops, pull the loose ends through them and tighten;
  • measure the circumference of the animal’s neck using a centimeter;
  • measure the length of the material according to the measurements obtained and fasten the second part of the fastener;
  • the first leftmost segment is moved to the right after two segments, and the rightmost segment is moved to the left, which allows you to get a kind of figure eight;
  • in the process of further weaving, the two central segments serve as a kind of basis for the resulting accessory.

In a certain place a ring is woven in for the carabiner of the leash. It should be noted that you need to purchase only high-quality paracord from trusted manufacturers. You can remove dirt from the finished product under running water. using a brush with soap.

Attention! To check the quality of paracord, you need to set its edge on fire. Good material burns with a smoky flame, emitting black smoke and the characteristic smell of burnt plastic.

Braided collar

More often Nylon slings are used to weave the collar yourself, as well as strips of leather or durable lacing.

Regardless of the type of material, weaving technology does not differ significantly:

  • fold the lacing in half and thread it through the carabiner;
  • make a loop and pull a couple of free ends of the lacing through it;
  • measure the length of the collar and thread the free ends through the carabiner clasp;
  • stretch the left lacing under the two central sections, and the right lacing under the left, on top of the two central sections, and then tighten the knot;
  • stretch the right segment under the two central lacings, and the left one under the right, on top of the pair of central ones, and then tighten the knot.

In the central part you can weave a ring for fastening a special tag with the pet's name or address its owner.

The presence of available materials in the form of leftover leather, scraps of fabric or yarn allows you, with minimal time and effort, to independently make a bright and exclusive collar, which can be decorated with various accessories, fur or any decorative elements. The huge number of different options for creating an accessory makes the chance of seeing something similar on another animal minimal.

Video about DIY dog collars:

If you have a dog, then a collar is simply necessary. Choosing a pet collar based on size, material, color, and decor in a store is not difficult. But making a stylish collar for a dog quickly and step by step with your own hands from paracord is much more interesting. It's easy, fast and not expensive.

We make a simple and comfortable dog collar with our own hands

You can choose a variety of materials as a base, but in order to make your beloved pet different from others, you will need:

  • Two paracords.
  • Vise.
  • Lock buckle.
  • D-ring.
  • Scissors.
  • Tweezers.
  • Measuring tape.
  • Lighter.
  • Beads.

Since paracord is light, durable, smooth, and elastic, it is perfect for a collar. To get started, you need to measure the dog’s neck in the place where the collar will be located, and add 4 centimeters to the resulting figure. Multiply the removed size by four. The resulting figure is the size of one skein of paracord. Let's start weaving:

Fold the two cords in half and pull each cord through the end of the single-slot buckle, then thread the two cords through the D-ring, pushing them snugly toward the buckle. Now thread the ends of the paracord through your loops and tighten.

On a stable surface, hold the buckle in a vise and take the left pair of cords, wrap it around the right pair of cords, then thread it between the two, as if tying a knot. Also work with the right pair of cords, continuing to weave the collar. Finish weaving 5 centimeters from the end.

Take the right and left cords, wrap them around the free area and thread them through the loop at the top. Hide the ends, trim off the excess and burn the ends. The paracord collar is ready.

Beaded collar for dachshund.

Inspired by the paracord collar you made, you can embellish the collar and make it out of beads. This original collar is suitable for any small dog. A beaded collar can be made using cotton threads; they hold the knot perfectly, but become frayed when worn. And so that it does not fray and becomes shiny, you can treat it with wax. Cotton thread called “Iris” is very comfortable, has shine and a wide range of colors.

Using nylon threads, the work will be difficult, since the knot does not hold well, but it looks great in the product, the work will be more elegant, neat, and the collar itself will be rigid. Necessary materials:

  • Round clasp with strap fixation.
  • Threads.
  • Pins.
  • Thin and strong wire.
  • Scissors.
  • Lighter with metal top or glue moment.
  • Beads or souvenir coins.

Measure the length of the thread, take the dog's collar and measure from the lock to the hole. Multiply the resulting number by seven - this is the length of the thread, add 5 centimeters to the tail and get to work:

Fold the thread in half and tie it to the lock (the lock should be turned inside out) so that the tongue is in the center and tightly clamped with threads.

Place beads on the thread and weave according to the pattern.

After two centimeters of completed work, make a row of horizontal bridges, attach a loop, again a row of bridges and continue making the drawing. Weave until the first hole, leaving in the work the number of threads that will form a strip that easily fits into the lock. Cut off excess threads, leaving 4 mm. Set the cut threads on fire and quickly press them with the metal part of the lighter or fix them from the inside with glue. Finish the formed tongue with five brids.

How to choose a collar for a Chihuahua?

You need to choose a collar that is sized so that it does not squeeze the throat and does not jump out of the collar. It is easy to choose for a Chihuahua, since you do not need to calculate the size; it does not grow more than 23 centimeters at the withers. Chihuahuas do not need guard collars, strict collars or choke collars. The most popular type of collar for Chihuahuas is the classic walking one. It must be fastened with one ring, one finger must fit through, if it does not fit through, then it is tight and will squeeze the throat. If more than one finger fits, the dog will be able to pull the collar over his head. Collars can be made of canvas or leather. A canvas collar is the most durable, it is not afraid of rain and can be washed when it gets dirty, paying attention to the metal buckle. A collar for a Chihuahua should be light, durable, double-layered, not rigid, have many holes, and the ring for attaching the carabiner should be reliable.

Video on the topic of the article

After detailed step-by-step instructions, we invite you to watch a video lesson on how to make a collar for a dog.

The choice of collars for pets is almost unlimited: any sizes, materials, colors, shapes and decor options. But sometimes you really want something special! Why not? Making dog collars with your own hands is not at all difficult if you know the principle of assembling individual parts of simple equipment. But you can decorate the ribbon to your liking - colorful fabric, bows, inscriptions, bright buttons, beads. Imagine!

Of course, you should start by determining the size: take a tailor's meter, draw it around the pet's neck and write down the result. Don't forget to add a few centimeters to the seams and fastenings. And remember that the collar should sit somewhat loosely. Don't have a meter? No problem, we use the old collar to guide us.

Materials and accessories

The most wear-resistant and safe collars are made from nylon tape. A textile sling is ideal - a very durable material designed for high loads, temperature changes, high humidity, friction, etc. From similar materials I sew tourist and construction unloading belts, straps for backpacks and handles of travel bags. Since we are going to sew a dog collar to our own taste, you can choose any color or decorate the ribbon with velvet, water-repellent or reflective fabric, textile ribbon with a pattern - in general, hide the base under the decorating material. Simply attach the outer layer to the nylon and stitch on both sides (or in the middle, maybe crosswise if the collar is wide, for a large dog). To make your pet more comfortable, you can also make an internal lining (fleece or any other soft fabric that reduces friction). Collar base:

Before making a collar for your dog, you need to decide not only the length, but also the width of the ribbon. If the collar is too wide, the pet will be uncomfortable; if it is too narrow, it will be painful, as the strap will cut into the delicate skin of the neck. When choosing the width of the belt, it is advisable to start from the width of the fastex - the latch that fastens the edges of the collar. By the way, you shouldn’t save money on buying fastex, because the safety of your pet depends on the reliability of the latch:

To attach the carabiner to the leash, a half ring like this is used. Make sure that the soldering area is secure, without a wide gap. The ring itself must be made of durable metal that cannot be bent by hand. Small D-rings for straps, lanyards and jewelry are not suitable, as it is important to make the dog's collar as strong as possible. And the thin rings designed to support the bra simply cannot withstand the tug (even if the pet is the size of a cat).

If you want the length of the collar to be adjustable (what if your pet gains a couple of extra pounds?), you will need a double-slit buckle. To fasten it correctly, take the ribbon in your right hand, the buckle in your left, pass the free edge of the ribbon into the first hole of the buckle from below, trace the diameter and pass the ribbon into the second hole, down. Now all that remains is to thread the free edge of the tape into the fastex trident, make a downward bend and from below once again pass the tape along the top of the buckle diameter towards the fastex. In general, such explanations only confuse. It’s easier to take an old collar, bra or handbag and see how a simple design is made that allows you to adjust the length (straps, handles, belt, etc.). Actually, the buckle:

And also scissors, a sewing machine, strong threads and various decorations if desired - that’s all you need to assemble a beautiful and, of course, exclusive dog collar with your own hands in about twenty minutes. The procedure is simple:

  • if the collar should have an inscription, decorative stitching, an additional layer of material, etc., first we sew and embroider the beauty along the entire length of the ribbon. But beads, flower bows and other voluminous decorations are sewn and glued at the very end;
  • we take the fastex in our hands and divide it into two halves (the trident and the other, the so-called “female” part);
  • We pass one of the edges of the tape through the trident and bend it down. Sew firmly in two places across the tape (almost at the latch itself and after about one or two centimeters, and crosswise in the middle);

Don’t forget to attach a buckle before the fastex to regulate the length of the collar, if necessary.

  • take another part of the fastex and the other edge of the tape. We also thread the ribbon and pull it through the fastex slot, measuring the required length so that there is room left for attaching the ring. So, we threaded the ribbon, folded it, made a transverse stitch - the fastex is secured. We step back a little from the edge (depending on the size of the dog) and make another line across the tape;
  • We put the ring for the carabiner on the tape, drag it all the way to the line. We apply the bottom edge of the tape to the outer one, and again, but now behind the ring, we make a line. The ring turned out to be firmly sewn into the collar strap. To increase reliability, behind the ring we make several additional neat stitches across the tape or crosswise.
You don’t have to buy beautiful dog collars in stores; you can make them yourself. A variety of bases can be used for dog collars.

For large breeds, it is better to choose belt straps. For decorative dogs, you can use regular fabric and non-woven fabric. It is worth purchasing new carabiners, and a metal half-ring can be found at home.

It is important that all buckles and parts are the same size. Their width should also match the size of the dog. The larger the pet, the stronger and more reliable the buckles should be.

To determine the size of the product, you can use an old collar. You can also measure your neck circumference (plus 6 centimeters) or use standard sizes. You can sew a beautiful braid on top of the collar, this will be an additional decoration. When choosing materials, it is advisable to give preference to bright fabrics, which, however, can be easily cleaned.

Light-colored fabric is less suitable unless it is water-repellent. Detailed instructions with photos will tell you how to make a dog collar with your own hands.

Materials and tools:
Buckle-lock - plastic
Half ring (D-ring) - metal
Slider (moving ring with divider) - plastic
Ring - plastic or metal
Thick colored fabric and non-woven adhesive backing
Measuring tape or ruler
Scissors
Needle and thread
Sewing machine

All materials must be strong to withstand the load and not break or tear. They may not be new, but they must be intact.

DIY dog collar: step-by-step instructions

Make the base for the collar:

1. The width of the buckles determines the width of the collar.
2. Using a measuring tape, measure the circumference of the dog's neck - this will be the length of the collar. Standard length: for toy breeds - 51 centimeters for medium-sized dogs - 64 centimeters large dogs - 76 centimeters
3. Cut out the base for the collar from non-woven fabric.
4. Cut a strip of fabric that matches the length of the non-woven base, but is four times wider.

How to sew a collar:

1. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise. The front side is outside. Run along the fold with a fingernail or ruler.
2. Expand. The fold should remain visible. Place a strip of interlining along the fold line. Non-woven fabric will give density and shape to the future collar.
3. Fold the edges of the fabric inward. Iron.
4. Fold it in half. Press.
5. Sew short ends. To do this, unfold the short sides of the workpiece and stitch it manually or on a machine. In the photo, the seam is indicated by a red dotted line.
6. Trim the ends of the fabric at a 45 degree angle. Turn right side out.
7. Step back 1-2 millimeters from the edge and sew along the long side, repeat along the fold.

How to assemble a collar:

1. Attach the clasp at one end of the belt. Sew on a machine. Attach the tip to the inside of the collar.
2. Thread the plastic ring.
3. Place the collar face up on the work surface. Take the inside of the carabiner clasp. Pass the tip of the collar blank through the carabiner hole. Pull the tip up. Pass the tip through the second hole in the carabiner.

This project is addressed to all those who have a four-legged pet, a sewing machine and 15 minutes of free time.

Making a dog collar with your own hands is very cheap, simple and also very fast!

It's so fun and exciting that it's hard to stop at just one and not make a whole collection of collars for your pet.

Making a dog collar with your own hands: step-by-step description

Step 1. Preparing materials
This project requires only a small amount of materials, which can easily be found at your local sewing and craft store. You will need:

textile sling 25 mm wide
braid of any color you like, 25 mm wide
fastex type clasp 25 mm
double slot buckle 25 mm
half ring 25 mm
threads

*If you have a small puppy, you can use a sling and braid 10-15 mm wide. Their length depends on the size of your pet. The easiest way is to measure your neck circumference and multiply that number by 1.75.

Step 2. Sew the braid to the sling
Set the machine to sewing on coarse fabric, use a suitable needle and a short stitch length (2.0 is fine). To ensure that the seam is as close to the edge as possible, the needle is placed on the right side. Hold the braid and sling firmly and sew along the entire length on both sides and across the edges.

Step 3. Installing the socket part of the fastener
Unfasten the clasp and thread one end of the sling with the braid sewn to it through its socket part. The short end of the sling should be at least 4-5 cm.

After this, simply walk across the strap next to the buckle a few times to secure it. The result is clearly visible in the photo below.

Step 4. Sew on the half ring
We put a half ring on the sling so that it is next to the sewn fastener. We sew it across again several times, fixing it.

Step 5. Installing the double-slit buckle and the second part of the clasp
This step is a little more difficult than the previous ones and requires creative thinking.

Take the second, free end of the sling and thread it through the plastic double-slot buckle, then through the second, not yet sewn, half of the fastener. After this, thread the sling through the double-slot again, making a second loop under the first.

Not very clear? Look at the photo above. As they say, it's better to see once.

Step 6. Fix the double-slot buckle
This is the last step, and it is the most difficult. Take the end of the sling and place it on the sling itself so as to fix the buckle in place, having previously prepared the sewing machine so that it is convenient for the needle to reach the end of the sling with the braid sewn to it.

You may need to remove part of the machine to give yourself more access and space to work.
