Grammidin is an antibacterial drug intended for topical use for various infectious and inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity and pharynx (pharyngitis, tonsillitis, tonsillitis, periodontitis, gingivitis, stomatitis).

Varieties, names, release forms and composition

Currently, Grammidin is available in the following varieties:
  • Grammidin;
  • Grammidin for children;
  • Grammidin Neo;
  • Grammidin with anesthetic;
  • Grammidin with anesthetic Neo.
Thus, there are five types of the drug, which differ from each other in the presence or absence of additional active components or their dosages and, accordingly, some features of the therapeutic effects. All five varieties of Grammidin contain the same main active substance, but in different dosages. But Grammidin varieties also contain other, additional active components that do not change the main therapeutic effect, but only give it some additional nuances or features. In principle, since all varieties of Grammidin have the same basic effect, they can be considered together, indicating only the characteristic features of each type of drug.

Varieties of Grammidin are commonly called by their official names (for example, Grammidin Neo, Grammidin with anesthetic, etc.). The only varieties of the drug that have a different common name from the official one are Grammidin with anesthetic and Grammidin with anesthetic Neo. These varieties are commonly called "Grammidin red", since the packaging of these tablets shows a red scarf. The packaging of other varieties of Grammidin also features a scarf painted in different colors. Moreover, each type of drug corresponds to a scarf of a certain color shown on the packaging.

All varieties of Grammidin are available in the same single dosage form - lozenges.

All varieties of Grammidin include as the main active component gramicidin C in the following different dosages:

  • Grammidin – contains 1.5 mg (1500 units) of gramicidin C per tablet;
  • Grammidin for children - contains 1.5 mg (1500 units) of gramicidin C per tablet;
  • Grammidin Neo – contains 3 mg (3000 units) of gramicidin C per tablet;
  • Grammidin with anesthetic - contains 1.5 mg (1500 units) of gramicidin C per tablet;
  • Grammidin with anesthetic Neo - contains 3 mg (3000 units) of gramicidin C per tablet.
Thus, Grammidin, Grammidin for children and Grammidin with anesthetic contain 1.5 mg of the main active substance, and Grammidin Neo and Grammidin with anesthetic Neo - 3 mg each.

Additional active ingredients contain the varieties Grammidin for children, Grammidin Neo, Grammidin with anesthetic and Grammidin with anesthetic Neo. Moreover, Grammidin for children, Grammidin Neo and Grammidin with anesthetic contain one additional active component, and Grammidin with anesthetic Neo - two. The composition and dosage of the main and additional active components of all varieties of Grammidin are shown in the table:

Grammidin Grammidin for children Grammidin Neo Grammidin with anesthetic Grammidin with anesthetic Neo
Gramicidin C – 1.5 mg (main active ingredient)Gramicidin C – 1.5 mg (main active ingredient)Gramicidin C – 3 mg (main active ingredient)
Cetylpyridinium chloride – 1 mg (additional active ingredient)Lidocaine hydrochloride – 10 mg (additional active ingredient)Cetylpyridinium chloride – 1 mg (additional active ingredient)
Oxybuprocaine hydrochloride – 200 mcg (additional active ingredient)

The main active component of the drug, gramicidin C, has an antibacterial effect, destroying various bacteria that can cause infectious and inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity and pharynx.

Additional active ingredient cetylpyridinium chloride expands the spectrum of antimicrobial action of the drug, since it has a detrimental effect on viruses, fungi and protozoa. And gramicidin, in turn, destroys bacteria.

Lidocaine hydrochloride And Oxybuprocaine hydrochloride, being additional active components of Grammidin with anesthetic and Grammidin with anesthetic Neo, have an analgesic effect, relieving pain in infectious and inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity and pharynx.

Varieties of Grammidin include various excipients shown in the table below:

Grammidin and Grammidin with anesthetic are available in the form of round tablets, colored white or white with a yellowish tint and packaged in 10 or 20 pieces.

Grammidin for children is available in the form of round, biconvex tablets, equipped with a chamfer (beveled edge) and GR engraving on one side. The tablets have a raspberry odor and are white or white with a yellowish tint. Packed in cardboard boxes of 12, 18 and 24 pieces.

Grammidin Neo and Grammidin with anesthetic Neo are available in the form of round biconvex tablets, colored white and engraved with GR on one side. Packed in cardboard boxes of 12, 18 and 24 pieces.

Therapeutic effect

The main therapeutic effect of all varieties of Grammidin is due to main active component – gramicidin C. Gramicidin C has an antibacterial effect, destroying pathogenic and opportunistic bacteria that cause infectious and inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity and pharynx. Due to this antibacterial effect, Grammidin ensures cleansing of the mucous membrane of the mouth and pharynx from pathogenic bacteria, thereby promoting recovery from infectious and inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity and pharynx (pharyngitis, tonsillitis, stomatitis, gingivitis, etc.).

Cetylpyridinium chloride, which is part of Grammidin for children, Grammidin Neo and Grammidin with the anesthetic Neo as the second active substance, is a broad-spectrum antiseptic. It destroys viruses, protozoa, fungi and other microbes that cause infectious and inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity and pharynx. Thus, cetylpyridinium chloride expands the antimicrobial spectrum of action of Grammidin, making the drug effective for the treatment of infectious and inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity caused not only by bacteria, but also by viruses, protozoa, fungi, and other pathogenic microbes.

In addition, cetylpyridinium chloride softens discomfort in the throat, facilitates swallowing and causes increased salivation, due to which microbes are mechanically removed from the surface of the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat.

Lidocaine hydrochloride, which is part of Grammidin with anesthetic, and Oxybuprocaine hydrochloride, which is part of Grammidin with the antiseptic Neo, have an analgesic effect, relieving pain in the throat and mouth caused by infectious and inflammatory diseases.

Thus, all varieties of Grammidin reduce the severity of inflammation, soften discomfort in the throat, make swallowing less painful and contribute to the mechanical removal of microbes from the mucous membrane of the mouth and throat, thereby easing the course of the disease and accelerating recovery.

Varieties with cetylpyridinium chloride (Grammidin for children, Grammidin Neo and Grammidin with anesthetic Neo) act not only on bacteria, but also on viruses, so they can be used for viral infections of the oral cavity and pharynx.

Teenagers over 12 years old and adults it is necessary to select Grammidin among the “adult varieties”, such as Grammidin, Grammidin with anesthetic, Grammidin Neo and Grammidin with anesthetic Neo.

So, if a teenager over 12 years of age or an adult presumably has a bacterial infectious-inflammatory disease of the oral cavity or pharynx (this can be easily understood by the presence of pus in the discharge), then he should choose Grammidin or Grammidin with an anesthetic. Simply, Grammidin is suitable for not too intense pain in the throat and oral cavity, and Grammidin with an anesthetic should be preferred for severe pain. In principle, you can combine the use of Grammidin and Grammidin with an anesthetic, for example, using Grammidin in the daytime, and in the evening, before bedtime, Grammidin with an anesthetic, to ensure quick falling asleep and more or less comfortable sleep.

If a teenager over 12 years of age or an adult presumably has a viral infectious-inflammatory disease of the oral cavity or pharynx (this is easy to understand by mucous discharge without pus), then it is optimal to use Grammidin Neo or Grammidin with the anesthetic Neo. Moreover, if the inflammatory process is accompanied by severe pain in the throat or mouth, then it is better to use Grammidin with the anesthetic Neo. If the pain in the throat or mouth is not severe, then it is optimal to use Grammidin Neo. If necessary, you can combine Grammidin Neo and Grammidin with the anesthetic Neo, using one or another drug depending on the severity of the pain syndrome at the current time. For example, if the sore throat is severe, then Grammidin with the anesthetic Neo is used, and if after two hours the pain is tolerable and not as severe as it was, then Grammidin Neo is used.

Instructions for use of Grammidin

The tablets should be dissolved in the mouth until completely dissolved, periodically swallowing the saliva released in large quantities. It is optimal to dissolve the tablets after meals, since after taking Grammidin it is recommended to abstain from drinking and eating for 1 to 2 hours. The recommendation not to consume food or drinks for 1 to 2 hours after resorption of the Grammidin tablet is due to the fact that for the best therapeutic effect, the active substances should remain on the mucous membranes for as long as possible, and drinking and food will simply wash them away, thereby stopping their effect.

Grammidin can be used for children from 4 years of age and adults. In this case, children aged 4–12 years should dissolve 1–2 tablets 4 times a day, and adolescents over 12 years of age and adults should take 2 tablets 4 times a day. The maximum permissible daily dosage is 8 tablets.

The two tablets should be dissolved one after the other, and not simultaneously. That is, first a person must dissolve one tablet, and only after that put the second one into the oral cavity. You should not place two tablets in your mouth and dissolve at the same time, as this will lead to a less uniform distribution of the active substance throughout the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat and, accordingly, lower therapeutic effectiveness of the drug.

The duration of use of Grammidin is 5–6 days. If within a week the use of Grammidin does not bring relief, then you should stop taking the drug and consult a doctor.

Instructions for use of Grammidin for children

Grammidin for children Intended for use in children over 4 years of age and adults. Children aged 4–12 years should take 1 tablet 4 times a day, and adolescents over 12 years of age and adults should take 2 tablets 4 times a day. The maximum permissible daily dosage of Grammidin for children for children 4 to 12 years old is 4 tablets, and for adolescents over 12 years old and adults - 8 tablets. The duration of use of children's Grammidin is 5–6 days. If the condition does not improve within a week, you should stop taking the drug and consult a doctor.

Two tablets should be dissolved in turn, first the first and then the second. You should not dissolve two tablets at the same time, as this reduces the exposure and distribution of the active component on the mucous membranes of the mouth and pharynx, and thereby reduces the effectiveness of the therapeutic effect.

The tablets should be dissolved in the mouth, waiting until they are completely dissolved, without biting or chewing. During the dissolution of the tablets, a large amount of saliva is released, which must be swallowed. After resorption of the tablets, it is recommended to refrain from eating and drinking for 1 to 2 hours to ensure that the active component of Grammidin remains on the mucous membranes for as long as possible. Therefore, it is optimal to dissolve the tablets after meals, so that you can safely abstain from eating and drinking for 1 to 2 hours.

Instructions for use of Grammidin Neo and Grammidin with Neo anesthetic

These varieties of Grammidina intended for use in children over 4 years of age and adults. The tablets should be dissolved in the mouth, waiting until they are completely dissolved, without biting or chewing. During the dissolution of the tablets, a large amount of saliva is released, which must simply be swallowed.

After resorption of the tablets, it is recommended to refrain from eating and drinking for 1 - 2 hours to ensure the longest possible presence of the active components on the mucous membrane of the oral cavity and pharynx and, as a result, the best therapeutic effect. Therefore, it is recommended to dissolve the tablets after meals so that you can safely endure 1–2 hours without food or drink.

Children aged 4 - 12 years should dissolve 1 tablet 1 - 2 times a day, and adolescents over 12 years of age and adults - 1 tablet 3 - 4 times a day. If the condition does not improve within a week, you should stop taking the drug and consult a doctor.

Instructions for use of Grammidin with anesthetic

This type of drug intended for use in children over 3 years of age and adults. The tablets should be dissolved in the mouth until completely dissolved, without biting or chewing. During the period of resorption of the tablets, a large amount of saliva may be released, which must simply be swallowed.

After resorption of the tablet, it is recommended to refrain from eating and drinking for 1 - 2 hours to ensure the longest possible stay of the active components of the drug on the mucous membranes of the mouth and pharynx and, accordingly, the best therapeutic effect. That is why it is optimal to dissolve Grammidin with an anesthetic after a meal, so that you can abstain from drinking and eating for 1 - 2 hours.

If you need to take two tablets at a time, they should be dissolved one at a time. That is, first one tablet is placed in the mouth, it dissolves completely, and only after that the second tablet is taken. You should not dissolve two tablets at once, as this can lead to an uneven and insufficiently long presence of the active components on the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat and, accordingly, a decrease in the effectiveness of the drug.

Children aged 3 - 12 years should dissolve 1 - 2 tablets 4 times a day, and adolescents over 12 years of age and adults - 2 tablets 4 times a day. The maximum permissible daily dosage is the same for children and adults, and is 8 tablets per day. The duration of therapy is 5–6 days. If after a week there are no improvements, then you should stop taking Grammidin with anesthetic and consult a doctor.

special instructions

Varieties of Grammidin with cetylpyridinium chloride (Grammidin for children, Grammidin Neo and Grammidin with anesthetic Neo) cannot be used in the presence of open wounds in the oral cavity, since this substance slows down their healing.

Overdose

Cases of overdose with tablets of any type of Grammidin have not been recorded even once during the entire period of observation of the clinical use of the drug.

Impact on the ability to operate machinery

All varieties of Grammidin do not affect the ability to perform hazardous activities, therefore, while using the drugs, a person can engage in any work that requires high reaction speed and concentration (for example, driving a car, working on a conveyor belt, operator, etc.) .

Interaction with other drugs

All varieties of Grammidin enhance the effects of other antimicrobial drugs used topically or systemically. There are no other significant interactions with other drugs in Grammidin varieties.

Grammidin during pregnancy and breastfeeding

All varieties of Grammidin contraindicated for use during breastfeeding, since the active components may pass into milk.

Varieties of Grammidin containing cetylpyridinium chloride(Grammidin for children, Grammidin Neo and Grammidin with the anesthetic Neo) are contraindicated for use during the first trimester of pregnancy, that is, from the moment of conception until the end of the 13th week of gestation. In the second and third trimesters of pregnancy (from the 14th week of gestation until birth), varieties of Grammidin with cetylpyridinium chloride can be used only in cases where the expected benefit to the woman outweighs all possible risks to the fetus.

Grammidin and Grammidin with anesthetic can be used during pregnancy of any stage, including in the first trimester, but only in cases where the expected benefit for the woman exceeds all possible risks for the fetus.

In other words, it is recommended to refrain from using any type of Grammidin during pregnancy, but if for some reason there is an urgent need to take pills, then the use of drugs is allowed.

Grammidin for children

General provisions

All types of the drug can be used to treat infectious and inflammatory diseases of the throat and oral cavity in children. Moreover, Grammidin with an anesthetic can be used for children starting from the age of three, and all other types of the drug (Grammidin, Grammidin Neo, Grammidin for children and Grammidin with an anesthetic Neo) - from four years.

Children's Grammidin is no different from the "adult" varieties, since even the dosage of active components in it is exactly the same as in “adult” products. Thus, the presence of a special variety of children's Grammidin is simply a marketing ploy by the manufacturer, who is thus trying to ensure sales for this target group. In practice, all Grammidins can be used for children starting from the age of four, and Grammidin with an anesthetic even from the age of three.

Optimal for use in children are Grammidin, Grammidin for children and Grammidin with anesthetic. These types of drugs must be used correctly in order for them to bring maximum benefit. Thus, regular Grammidin is best suited for the treatment of infectious and inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity and pharynx caused by bacteria (this can be easily determined by the presence of pus in the discharge). Grammidin for children is best suited for the treatment of infections caused by viruses (this can be easily determined by the presence of only mucus and the absence of pus in the discharge). Grammidin with an anesthetic is best used when a child has severe pain in the throat and mouth. Moreover, Grammidin with an anesthetic can be combined with regular Grammidin or children's Grammidin. In this case, the type of drug that is best suited for the treatment of the current infection of the throat or mouth is selected, and additionally Grammidin with an anesthetic. Further, during periods of severe pain, the child is given a drug with an anesthetic, and at other times - the selected type of Grammidin to treat a bacterial or viral infection.

Thus, we can summarize that for viral infections of the oral cavity and pharynx, Grammidin for children is optimal for a child, and for bacterial infections, regular Grammidin is optimal. If there is severe pain in the throat or mouth, then it is optimal to add Grammidin with an anesthetic to Grammidin or Grammidin for children, which is given 1-2 times a day instead of the main drug.

Grammidin for children - instructions for use

Children should be given tablets of any type of Grammidin and make sure that they dissolve them in the mouth and do not swallow them whole, do not bite them or chew them. The child should be warned that during resorption a large amount of saliva will be released, which must simply be swallowed.

If you need to dissolve two tablets at a time, then this should be done alternately. That is, first give the child one tablet, wait until he swallows it, and only after that give the second. You should not give two tablets at once so that the child dissolves them simultaneously, as this can lead to improper distribution and a decrease in the exposure time of the active components on the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat and, accordingly, a deterioration in the therapeutic effect.

It is optimal to give tablets of any type of Grammidin to a child after meals, since after the drug is absorbed, it is recommended to refrain from eating and drinking for 1 to 2 hours. The recommendation to refrain from drinking and eating is due to the fact that it is desirable that the active components of the drug remain on the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat for as long as possible, providing a therapeutic effect. And if you eat or drink within 1 - 2 hours after dissolving the tablet, you can simply wash off the active substances from the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat, thereby stopping their therapeutic effect.

Dosages of Grammidin are the same for children 4–12 years old, but different for different types of the drug. So, It is recommended to give Grammidin varieties to children aged 4 – 12 years in the following dosages:

  • Grammidin - give 1 - 2 tablets 4 times a day;
  • Grammidin for children - give 1 tablet 4 times a day;
  • Grammidin with anesthetic (can be used for children from three years old) - give 1 - 2 tablets 4 times a day;
  • Grammidin Neo – give 1 tablet 1 – 2 times a day;
  • Grammidin with anesthetic Neo - give 1 tablet 1 - 2 times a day.
Any variety of Grammidin can be given to children 5 – 6 days. If the child’s health does not improve within a week, then you should stop taking the drug and consult a doctor.

Side effects

All varieties of Grammidin can cause various allergic reactions as side effects.

Varieties of the drug containing cetylpyridinium chloride (Grammidin for children, Grammidin Neo and Grammidin with the anesthetic Neo), in addition to allergic reactions, can cause disorders of the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract (diarrhea, nausea) as side effects.

Varieties of Grammidin containing anesthetics (Grammidin with anesthetic and Grammidin with anesthetic Neo) can, in addition to allergic reactions, cause temporary numbness of the tongue as a side effect. However, this numbness goes away within 30 to 40 minutes after the anesthetic wears off.

Thus, varieties of Grammidin can cause the following symptoms as side effects:

  • Grammidin – allergic reactions only;
  • Grammidin Neo and Grammidin for children - allergic reactions + diarrhea and nausea;
  • Grammidin with anesthetic – allergic reactions + numbness of the tongue;
  • Grammidin with anesthetic Neo - allergic reactions + diarrhea and nausea + numbness of the tongue.

Contraindications for use

Various varieties of Grammidin are contraindicated for use if a person has the following conditions or diseases:
  • Breastfeeding period;
  • Individual hypersensitivity or allergic reactions to any components of the drugs;
  • I trimester of pregnancy (for Grammidin for children, Grammidin Neo and Grammidin with anesthetic Neo);
  • Phenylketonuria (for Grammidin for children and Grammidin with anesthetic);
  • Children under 4 years of age (for Grammidin, Grammidin for children, Grammidin Neo and Grammidin with Neo anesthetic);
  • Children under 3 years of age (for Grammidin with anesthetic).

Analogues of the drug

Medicines have two types of analogues - these are synonymous drugs and, in fact, analogues. Synonyms include drugs containing the same active substances. And analogues are medicines that have the most similar spectrum of therapeutic activity, but contain different active components.

Unfortunately, synonymous drugs are available for only one type of Grammidin - regular Grammidin, containing only gramicidin C as an active component. Synonyms for this drug are lozenges and a solution for topical use of Gramicidin and Gramicidin paste.

All other varieties of Grammidin (Grammidin for children, Grammidin Neo, Grammidin with anesthetic and Grammidin with anesthetic Neo) do not have synonymous drugs on the domestic pharmaceutical market.

However, all varieties of Grammidin have analogue drugs that have a similar spectrum of therapeutic activity, but contain other active substances. These analogue drugs of all varieties of Grammidin are shown in the table. For each variety, we selected analogues in such a way that they contained active substances with a similar spectrum of action. For example, for Grammidin with an anesthetic, drugs were selected as analogues that also contain antimicrobial and analgesic components, etc.

What's better than Grammidin?

It is impossible to unequivocally answer the question of what is better than Grammidin, since in medical practice there is no concept of “better” or “worse” in relation to some abstract drug without indicating the specific situation in which it is planned to be used. It is necessary to evaluate which medicines are better or worse not just speculatively, based on their properties, but in relation to a specific situation. Indeed, in addition to the individual characteristics inherent in each person, any disease situation is also unique in its own way, and therefore, in each specific case, completely different drugs from the same group with similar properties may be the best or worst.

This means that for a certain person in one situation Grammidin will be the best, and in another case for the same person, on the contrary, this drug will be the worst, and the best will be a completely different one. Therefore, it is impossible to simply say which is better than Grammidin. To choose the best drug for a particular situation, it is recommended to try several similar drugs and evaluate their effects in practice, thus choosing what is best for a particular person.

The drug Grammidin is a domestically produced complex antibacterial agent based on the antibiotic gramicidin. It is successfully used to treat pharyngitis and other diseases of the throat and oral cavity.

Composition and release form

There are two types of the drug: Grammidin Neo and “Neo with anesthetic”. Do not look for the drug in capsules or ointment form. The dosage form of Grammidin is tablets.

Please note that the medicine is available in the form of lozenges (so-called buccal tablets) and, in fact, acts locally, without entering the bloodstream or accumulating in the body.

Grammidin tablets are packaged in blisters and packaged in cardboard boxes of different colors. The packaging of the drug is made in green colors (regular) or red (“Neo with anesthetic”).

Relatively recently, the manufacturer expanded its range, now Grammidin is also available in the form of a liquid spray, but we will talk specifically about tablets, as products that have proven themselves and are proven.

Is Grammidin an antibiotic?

The medicine contains an antibiotic – gramicidin. It belongs to antibacterial drugs that inhibit most strains of pathogenic flora.

In particular, the antibacterial component of Grammidin exhibits high activity against staphylococci and streptococci, which are the most common cause of infectious processes in the oral cavity.

These bacteria actively multiply in the mucous membrane of the larynx, causing a sore throat, pain, swelling and cough. The antibacterial effect of the drug leads to their death, as a result of which the manifestations of the disease quickly disappear.

In high concentrations, the antibiotic included in Grammidin has a bactericidal effect (destroys bacteria), and in small concentrations it has a bacteriostatic effect (prevents their reproduction).

The same antibiotic is included in some other medications used to treat a wide variety of diseases. However, these products do not treat throat and cough, and therefore they are not worth buying. In addition, Grammidin’s “analogs” do not include other important components of the drug.

In addition to the antibiotic, Grammidin contains an antiseptic with a different biochemical structure and mechanism of action - cetylperidinium chloride (this substance neutralizes bacteria resistant to the action of gramicidin).

And in Grammidin with an anesthetic an additional local anesthetic substance (oxybuprocaine hydrochloride) was added.

Thanks to this combination of active substances, both types of medicine not only quickly and completely eliminate the cause of the disease, but also contribute to significant relief of the patient’s condition immediately after the start of treatment: the throat stops hurting, swelling goes away, and the cough calms down.

Indications, use, dosage

Grammidin has a pronounced therapeutic effect for infections of the throat, gums and tongue.

Indications for use:

  • pharyngitis
  • stomatitis
  • gingivitis
  • angina
  • tonsillitis
  • periodontal disease

Grammidin tablets have a pleasant mint taste. However, this does not mean that the drug can be taken uncontrolled.

In adults and children over 12 years of age, Grammidin is taken 2 tablets (one is dissolved, then the other is dissolved within 20-30 minutes) up to 4 times a day. The standard course is 5-6 days. Children aged 4 – 12 years should take 1 tablet 4 times a day.

The components included in seemingly harmless throat tablets are quite toxic, so Grammidin is only suitable for treating children aged 4 years and older.

Clinical and pharmacological group

A drug with antibacterial and local anesthetic effects for local use in ENT practice

pharmachologic effect

Antibacterial combined drug for local use in the oral cavity and pharynx. The drug contains the antibiotic gramicidin C, the local anesthetic oxybuprocaine and the antiseptic cetylpyridinium chloride.

Gramicidin C has a pronounced antibacterial effect against pathogens of infectious and inflammatory diseases of the pharynx and oral cavity.

Increases the permeability of the microbial cell membrane, which disrupts its barrier functions and leads to its death.

The anesthetic oxybuprocaine, causing a reversible block of axonal conduction of nerve impulses, has an analgesic effect on the mucous membrane of the oral cavity and pharynx.

Cetylpyridinium chloride, being an antiseptic, inhibits the growth and reproduction of pathogens of infectious diseases of the oral cavity.

The drug has antimicrobial, analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, reduces discomfort in the oral cavity and pharynx, and facilitates the swallowing process.

When absorbed, the drug stimulates hypersalivation, which promotes mechanical cleansing of the oral cavity and pharynx from microorganisms.

Grammidin Neo is a medicinal drug that belongs to antimicrobial drugs. This remedy is used for ENT infections localized in the throat and oral cavity. The high effectiveness of this drug is manifested in the treatment of infectious and inflammatory pathologies.

Antibiotic or not

Gramicidin is an antibiotic and an antiseptic at the same time. This substance was isolated from the microorganisms Bacillusbrevis back in 1942. Gramicidin belongs to the polypeptide group, so antibiotic resistance is extremely rare in different strains.

Release form, composition and action

This medicine is available only in the form of tablets that need to be dissolved. They are white and round in shape, convex on both sides. The letters "GR" are written on one side of the tablets. They are produced in blisters of 6 and 9 pieces.

Grammidin Neo is sold without a prescription. But it is important that the treatment process is supervised by a doctor, since the drug is an antibacterial agent. And quite often, with purulent processes, treatment with Grammidin alone is ineffective.

The main effect of Grammidin Neo is due to the activity of gramicidin C. It is an antimicrobial component. Another active ingredient in the drug is cetylpyridinium chloride, an antiseptic that can expand the spectrum of action of the antimicrobial substance. The action extends to fungi, viruses, and protozoa.

Gramicidin C is able to increase the level of permeability of the bacterial cytoplasm. In this case, their protective function is affected and cell death occurs. This antimicrobial substance acts on infectious agents localized only in the mouth and throat. The antiseptic substance in the drug has a negative effect on the proliferation of colonies of these bacteria; the substance gramicidin C can have a negative effect on both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria.

Instructions for using Grammidin with an anesthetic (without the Neo prefix) indicate that the medicine contains lidocaine hydrochloride. This substance, getting on the mucous layer of the pharynx and mouth, has a local analgesic effect. This state continues for 40 minutes. The drug, which does not have the prefix Neo in its name, also contains eucalyptus oil and menthol. These components help relieve inflammation and discomfort. This improves the ability to swallow during illness. Menthol is a substance that enhances pain relief.

Based on this, the drug is capable of:

  • relieve inflammation;
  • kill pathogenic bacteria;
  • relieve throat discomfort and cough;
  • cause hypersalivation, that is, increased salivation, so that the mouth and throat can be naturally cleansed.

It is characteristic that with such a powerful effect, the components are not absorbed through the digestive tract, since the drug Grammidin Neo is produced in the form of tablets that need to be dissolved. That is, they act locally. The effect after taking the medicine occurs after 20 minutes.

In addition to the active ingredients, the drug contains excipients. These include:

  • magnesium;
  • sorbitol;
  • acesulfame potassium;
  • talc;
  • silicon.

Additionally, Grammidin contains flavorings. You can buy tablets with menthol, raspberry, lemon, and black currant flavors.

Types of the drug

Grammidin has several varieties (5 combinations). The difference lies in the concentration of gramicidin. One Grammidin Neo tablet and the drug, which includes an anesthetic, contain 3 mg of an antibacterial substance. Cetylpyridinium chloride is contained in an amount of 1 mg.

Grammidin Neo with anesthetic contains another additional active ingredient - oxybuprocaine hydrochloride - 200 mcg. This component has an analgesic effect.

Grammidin Neo and Grammidin with anesthetic are indicated for use by children over 12 years of age and adults. For each type of Grammidin there is a characteristic difference - the color of the scarf drawn on the packaging. Grammidin Neo has a red scarf on him. They are prescribed, as a rule, when there is discharge of pus and a pronounced inflammatory process. If there is still severe pain and difficulty swallowing, then a drug containing an anesthetic is prescribed.

If the inflammation has a viral etiology, these drugs are still effective. In this case, there will be no purulent discharge on the mucous membranes of the throat and oral cavity.

Indications and contraindications

Indications for the use of Grammidin Neo are throat pathologies - pharyngitis, sore throat, tonsillitis. According to the nosological classification, this drug is prescribed for acute and chronic forms of tonsillitis and pharyngitis. Gingivitis, periodontal diseases (periodontal disease, etc.), as well as stomatitis and related pathologies are also well treated with this drug.

Taking Grammidin Neo with and without an anesthetic has its own contraindications. There are few of them due to the fact that the medicine is not absorbed through the digestive tract.

Contraindications to taking Grammidin with and without anesthetic:

  • individual sensitivity to certain components;
  • pregnancy during the first trimester;
  • lactation;
  • age up to 4 years.

Rules for taking the drug

Despite the fact that doctors most often prescribe Grammidin Neo to children over 12 years of age, they can still be given to children after 4 years of age. In this case, it is recommended to take 1 tablet 1-2 times a day. And from 12 years of age and adults, the frequency of administration should be increased to 3-4 times.

The course of treatment is the same for both age groups – 5-6 days. If after this time there are no changes, then the drug is discontinued.

Grammidin Neo tablets are intended for resorption. In this case, the tablet should dissolve completely; you should not bite or chew it. After it has completely dissolved, you should not eat or drink for 1-2 hours. For a pronounced therapeutic effect, it is recommended to ensure that the active substances of the drug act on the mucous membrane of the mouth and throat for a long time. Therefore, you need to take the medicine after meals.

Side effects

Instructions for use of Grammidin Neo indicate that side effects occur extremely rarely. These phenomena include allergies. A reaction to a medicine that contains an anesthetic may include a decrease in the sensitivity of the tongue for some time. This state will last about 30 minutes.

Allergies manifest themselves in the form of swelling, urticaria and other skin manifestations.

To date, no cases of overdose with this drug have been registered.

Grammidin Neo can also cause a negative phenomenon in the form of disruption of the digestive tract. Symptoms include nausea and diarrhea. Such effects are due to the presence of cetylpyridinium chloride in the drug.

special instructions

Grammidin with anesthetic does not have any effect on reaction and concentration. That is, you can control transport and other complex mechanisms while taking this medicine.

If, during complex treatment, a person takes another antibacterial drug, then gramicidin C enhances its effect. Especially if it is also a topical agent.

Although gramicidin C is an antibiotic, combining it with alcohol is not as dangerous as when drugs are absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract. In this case, alcohol usually provokes accelerated absorption, and thereby increases the concentration of the active substance in the blood. Grammidin is a topical agent, which means that a negligible part enters the bloodstream. Accordingly, alcohol does not have an excessively destructive effect on the therapeutic effect.

It is important to store the drug correctly. Namely, that the tablets be hermetically sealed and stored in a dry place with a temperature of no more than 25 0 C. If all the rules are followed, the drug remains effective for 2 years.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Grammidin Neo and other varieties are contraindicated for women during lactation. This is due to the fact that the active components pass into breast milk, and as a result, the baby may experience digestive problems.

During the first trimester of pregnancy, there is a complete contraindication for taking a drug containing cetylpyridinium chloride. This medicine is sometimes prescribed in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters. In cases where the benefit of the drug exceeds the possible minimal harm to the fetus. This medicine is prescribed starting from 14 weeks of pregnancy.

But still in medical practice there are cases when doctors prescribe Grammidin to pregnant women in the first trimester. It is important that such treatment is supervised by a doctor. That is, for pregnant women, treatment of an infection of the throat or mouth with this drug is carried out only if absolutely necessary.

Grammidin for children

When using Grammidin Neo to treat children, you may encounter certain difficulties. This drug has a menthol flavor, which is not to all children's taste. For effective treatment, the child must completely dissolve the tablets. It is also important that the child swallows saliva, which will be released in large quantities.

Grammidin Neo has quite a lot of analogues. Some of them have the same active substance, and some are similar in action. A cheaper drug with the same antibacterial substance is Gramicidin S.

In turn, with the same mechanism of action there are Bioparox, Hexoral, Faringopils, Tonzipret, etc.
