Xylene drops instructions for use. Xylene for children: spray and nasal drops for the little ones. Interaction with other drugs, overdose

Xylene (active ingredient - xylometazoline) is a local vasoconstrictor from the group of alpha-adrenergic agonists for use in otolaryngological practice to facilitate nasal breathing. The nose, along with the throat, actually serves as an entry gate for infection to enter the body. It is the nasal cavity that is the very “Brest Fortress” that takes the main viral-bacterial “artillery” blow. In this regard, one of the most pressing issues in the autumn-winter period should be considered the relief of cold symptoms and improving the quality of life if the infection has not passed you by. The reason for the surge in acute respiratory infections is a number of factors, including the accumulation of “sneezing and coughing” masses of people in enclosed spaces, hypothermia, seasonal weakening of the immune system, the functioning of the heating system, etc. Thus, central heating contributes to a catastrophic decrease in humidity, as a result of which the mucous membrane of the nasal cavity dries out, its blood supply deteriorates and makes it more defenseless for viral and bacterial infections. All this greatly increases the chances of pathogenic microorganisms safely passing the mucous membrane of the nasal cavity and oropharynx and systemically penetrating the body. The first alarm bells of an infection are rhinorrhea, swelling of the nasal mucosa and difficulty in nasal breathing - in other words, everything that is popularly called a runny nose, and in the international classifier of diseases - acute rhinitis. Despite all the unpleasantness of its manifestation, it is necessary to point out that by running the nose and sneezing, the body tries to protect itself from foreign particles. The secretion secreted by the mucous membrane contains immune system factors such as the enzyme lysozyme and leukocytes. They protect the body from viral and bacterial invasion. Against the backdrop of a developing disease, the nasal mucosa is forced to literally work for wear and tear. Blood vessels dilate to allow air in the nasal passages to warm up more quickly and transport white blood cells to their destination.

As a result, swelling of the mucous membrane develops, which causes the same difficulty breathing characteristic of a runny nose. To more effectively remove foreign agents, mucus production increases significantly. Thus, during rhinitis, the human nasal mucosa is capable of producing about 1.5 liters of mucus per day. However, it is obvious that it is quite difficult to sit with your hands folded when it is pouring from your nose like a bucket, and you can only breathe through your mouth. In this regard, the pharmacological industry has created a huge number of drugs that can relieve cold symptoms and facilitate nasal breathing. One of these drugs is the domestic anticongestive drug xylene. When it comes into contact with the mucous membrane of the nasal cavity, it causes vasoconstriction, as a result of which the blood flow to its inflamed areas decreases and the swelling resolves. When applied topically, xylene is practically not absorbed into the systemic circulation, which minimizes its side effects. Moreover, the concentrations of xylometazoline, the active ingredient of the drug, are so low that they cannot be determined by modern analytical methods.

Xylene is available in two dosage forms: nasal drops and spray. The duration of use of the drug is on average from 7 to 14 days. The specific therapeutic dose is determined by the dosage form currently used and the age of the patient. Xylen should be prescribed with caution in children under 2 years of age. The same applies to pregnant or lactating women, who can use the drug only in cases where the expected benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risks to the child or fetus. The drug is not recommended to be taken for a long period of time, for example, when rhinitis has become chronic. Xylene is incompatible with monoamine oxidase inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants.

Pharmacology

Vasoconstrictor for local use in ENT practice. Alpha adrenergic agonist. When applied to the mucous membranes, it causes vasoconstriction, as a result of which local hyperemia and swelling are reduced. For rhinitis, it facilitates nasal breathing.

Pharmacokinetics

When applied topically, it is practically not absorbed; plasma concentrations are so small that they cannot be determined by modern analytical methods.

Release form

10 ml - polymer bottles (1) - cardboard packs.

Dosage

Apply topically for 7-14 days. The dose depends on the dosage form used and the age of the patient.

Interaction

Incompatible with MAO inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants.

Side effects

With frequent and/or prolonged use: irritation of the mucous membrane, burning, tingling, sneezing, dry nasal mucosa, hypersecretion.

Rarely: swelling of the nasal mucosa (more often with long-term use), palpitations, heart rhythm disturbances, increased blood pressure, headache, vomiting, sleep disorders, visual disturbances.

With long-term use in high doses: depressive state.

Indications

Acute allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, hay fever, otitis media (to reduce swelling of the nasopharyngeal mucosa), preparing the patient for diagnostic procedures in the nasal passages.

Contraindications

Angle-closure glaucoma, atrophic rhinitis, arterial hypertension, tachycardia, severe atherosclerosis, hyperthyroidism, surgical interventions on the meninges (history), hypersensitivity to xylometazoline.

Features of application

Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding

During pregnancy and lactation, it should be used only after a thorough assessment of the risk-benefit ratio for the mother and fetus; recommended doses should not be exceeded.

Use in children

special instructions

Should not be used for a long time, for example, for chronic rhinitis. For colds, in cases where crusts form in the nose, it is preferable to administer it in the form of a gel.

Use in pediatrics

Xylometazoline should be prescribed with caution to children under 2 years of age (gel - up to 7 years).

Vasoconstrictor drugs, which include Xylene nasal drops, are the most popular means for relieving the manifestations of a runny nose. Due to their effect on blood vessels, they reduce swelling of the mucous membrane and facilitate nasal breathing. Xylene has virtually no systemic effect, that is, its components in the blood are in minimal concentration.

The main active ingredient that has a therapeutic effect is xylometazoline in the form of hydrochloride. Additional components:

  • purified water is a solvent;
  • disodium edetate is a stabilizer that inactivates toxins and improves microcirculation;
  • potassium dihydrogen orthophosphate – stabilizer;
  • sodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate – emulsifier;
  • benzalkonium chloride - has an antimicrobial effect, due to which it protects the drug from infection by microorganisms.

The drug in the form of nasal drops is produced in dropper bottles for ease of use. The volume of one bottle is 10 ml. Drug concentration 0.1 and 0.05%. The manufacturer also produces the product in the form of a spray, the volume of the drug is also 10 ml, containing only xylometazoline.

pharmachologic effect

The nasal drug has a local vasoconstrictor effect. Its main active component belongs to the group of alpha-adrenergic agonists, therefore, when applied topically, it helps to narrow the diameter of blood vessels in the nasal mucosa, which in turn leads to a reduction in swelling during rhinitis and runny nose.

If there is congestion in the nasal passages, the medication facilitates and restores breathing, reducing the amount of discharge from the nasal cavity.

The effect of the drug after instillation appears within 2 to 5 minutes. Its duration of action can reach 10 hours. When applied topically, systemic effects are minimized.

Indications for use

The drug in the form of drops and spray is used for symptomatic treatment of the following diseases:

  • acute rhinitis, including if it is of an allergic nature;
  • sinusitis;
  • hay fever;
  • otitis media (to reduce swelling of the nasopharyngeal mucosa).

The medication can also be used in preparation for diagnostic procedures in the nasal cavity, such as rhinoscopy.

Restrictions on use

The drug should not be used in the presence of the following diseases:

  • hyperthyroidism;
  • atrophic rhinitis;
  • severe atherosclerosis;
  • angle-closure glaucoma;
  • tachycardia;
  • arterial hypertension;
  • hypersensitivity to the components of the drops.

Also, the drug is not used if the person has had surgery on the meninges in the past.

Xylen is used with extreme caution in children under two years of age and only if it is impossible to use other drugs, as well as in cases of coronary heart disease, diabetes mellitus, and benign prostate hyperplasia. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, the drug can be used, but only according to strict indications, and after determining the ratio of the benefit to the mother from this drug and the risk of side effects for the fetus (newborn).

Instructions for use

Xylene is used only topically, that is, dripped only into the nose. Before instillation (spraying), it is necessary to clear the nasal cavity of crusts and mucus. To do this you just need to blow your nose. 1-2 drops of the product are dripped into each nasal passage 3 times a day. The average course of treatment is 5 days; during this time the symptoms of the disease do not stop, you must consult a doctor.

If the product is in the form of a spray, then apply one spray into each nasal passage, 1-2 times a day. The duration of use is similar.

Use in children

The drug does not have a special form for children, so a standard form is used for them, but in pediatrics only the drug is used in a concentration of 0.05%. The dosage for children under 2 is determined only by a doctor.

Use during pregnancy and lactation

Doctors recommend avoiding treatment with this drug during pregnancy, as it can affect blood pressure, and its increase can affect the fetus. The same applies to the lactation period. If it is still necessary to use the drug, then breastfeeding is stopped for the period of treatment and the baby is transferred to artificial feeding. To maintain lactation, it is necessary to express milk during the treatment period.

Side effects

The medication is very well tolerated by the body, but some people still experience side effects:

  • increased discharge from the nasal cavity;
  • irritation of the nasal mucosa;
  • feeling of dryness in the nose;
  • sneezing attack;
  • tachycardia;
  • increased blood pressure.

In extremely rare cases, swelling of the mucous membrane, migraine, insomnia, impaired visual acuity and heart rhythm may occur. If the drug is used for a longer period than indicated in the instructions, atrophic changes and swelling of the nasal mucosa are possible.

Interaction with other drugs, overdose

Xylene is not recommended for use simultaneously with tricyclic antidepressants. It is prohibited to combine this drug with MAO inhibitors (monoamine oxidase). Xylene can be used only 2 weeks after discontinuation of these groups of drugs.

If you violate the rules of the instructions, that is, exceeding the permissible dosage and duration of treatment, the following are possible:

  • convulsions;
  • tachycardia;
  • depression;
  • surges in blood pressure.

There is no specific antidote to this drug, therefore, in cases of overdose, syndromic therapy is carried out, which is aimed at relieving symptoms and normalizing the function of blood vessels and the heart.

Conditions of sale, storage and expiration date

The drug can be purchased at a pharmacy without a doctor's prescription. Store it out of reach of small children, protected from sunlight at a temperature of 15 to 25 C. The shelf life of the therapeutic effect is 3 years from the date of manufacture of the drug, which is indicated on the cardboard packaging. After the expiration date, the medicinal product must be disposed of.

Xylene is a vasoconstrictor drug that relieves the manifestation of a runny nose. Promotes rapid restoration of nasal passages. Controls the functioning of the circulatory system, eliminates swelling of the nasal mucosa.

Brief description of the drug

Xylene nasal drops contain the active component xylometazoline, which causes constriction of blood vessels in the sinuses. When symptoms of a runny nose develop, the medicine optimizes respiratory processes, reduces swelling and hyperemia. The therapeutic effect occurs within 5 minutes from the moment of administration and lasts for 9 hours. The active substance is practically not absorbed and cannot be detected using modern methods. Used in ENT practice.

Composition and release form

The main active ingredient is xylometazoline hydrochloride. The medicine also includes:

  • purified water solvent;
  • stabilizer that removes toxins and improves blood circulation;
  • benzalkonium chloride - has an antimicrobial effect.

In addition to drops, you can find Xylene nasal spray on sale, intended for instillation of the nasal passages. Drops, regardless of concentration, are contained in bottles made of polyethylene material with a volume of 10 ml. Colorless, have no odor.

Drops are prescribed according to indications in a dosage of 0.05% for children over 2 years of age. A dosage of 0.1% is allowed for patients over 12 years of age and adults.

Use during pregnancy

Xylen nasal drops are not recommended for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, since scientists have not proven the safety of this product. Treatment can be carried out only if other drugs have not helped expectant mothers. Therapy is carried out under the supervision of a doctor and lasts no more than 3 days. A more suitable option would be to use drops in a pediatric dosage. Before use, it is necessary to assess the risk-benefit ratio for the mother and fetus.

Contraindications to the use of drops

The medication has a number of contraindications. It should not be used if the patient:

  1. systematic increase in pressure;
  2. cardiopalmus;
  3. disruption in the endocrine system;
  4. rhinitis with symptoms of atrophy of the nasal mucosa;
  5. rehabilitation period after brain surgery;
  6. vascular disease - atherosclerosis in severe form;
  7. individual intolerance to the drug.

When breastfeeding, drops are used in strict compliance with the recommendations.

special instructions

Nasal drops should be used with caution for the following pathologies:

  1. disturbances in the functioning of the heart;
  2. benign prostatic hyperplasia;
  3. diabetes mellitus, using insulin;
  4. children under 2 years of age;
  5. simultaneous use of inhibitors;
  6. increased sensitivity to adrenergic drugs, with symptoms of disturbed sleep, headache, high blood pressure.

In other cases, you can use nasal drops without fear of complications.

Instructions for use

The instructions say: Xylene spray and drops are intended for instillation of the nasal passages. Before introducing the product into the nose, it is necessary to eliminate mucous secretions. The interval between applications should be at least 8 hours. Recommended doses:

  • Children from 1 year old should take the drug at a dosage of 0.05%. To relieve nasal congestion and swelling, use the drug morning and evening, 2 drops in each nostril. In this case, it is necessary to tilt your head back for better distribution of the medicine.
  • For adult patients and children over 6 years of age, the drug is prescribed at a dosage of 0.1%.

The course of treatment is determined by the otolaryngologist, but it should not exceed more than 6 days. Long-term use can cause the body to become addicted to the active substance, which will require an increase in dosage and frequency of use.

If after 6 days from the start of therapy the patient’s condition does not improve, it is necessary to change the medicine, which contains a different component. If for some reason the patient missed the time of administration of the drug, the dose cannot be doubled during the next procedure.

Xylene for children: important points

Children's Xylen-drops for the nose, the instructions of which allow the use of the drug 2 times a day, instill a few drops into each nostril. Sometimes it is prescribed to infants.

The effect of the drops begins 5 minutes after instillation into the nose, and the results from taking them last up to 8 hours.

Many mothers are interested in the question of using a 0.1% solution for children. Pediatricians say that when the drug is administered in this consistency, the likelihood of side effects increases, such as headache, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid heartbeat, as well as a deterioration in the child’s general condition.

When using in childhood, the following factors must be taken into account:

  • the medicine should not be administered more than 3 times a day;
  • the nose must be cleared of mucous secretions before instillation;
  • if a dose is missed, the drug can be re-administered within an hour;
  • When using a spray, hold the sprayer vertically, insert the dispenser into the nose and sharply press the nozzle, then inhale through the nose for deep penetration of the product.

In any case, it is necessary to monitor the child’s reaction, and if something goes wrong, stop treatment immediately.

Drug overdose

Overdose is rare if the prescribed dose is followed. Unauthorized use of nasal drops and use of the drug for more than 10 days causes signs of an overdose in the patient:

  • fatigue, drowsiness, indifference to what is happening;
  • dizziness, lightheadedness;
  • headache;
  • increased blood pressure;
  • mental disorders.

If such clinical symptoms appear, the patient should stop taking the drug. Carry out treatment to eliminate these symptoms and normalize the functioning of the cardiovascular system.

Side effects

Xylene may cause unwanted effects. After long-term use, the following adverse reactions may occur:

These symptoms do not threaten health and go away on their own after stopping the drug.

  • Nasal drops – 25 rubles,
  • Xylene for children – 22 rubles.

Storage conditions

The medicine can be stored at a temperature of 15-25 degrees for 3 years.

Mechanism of action

The active ingredient of the drug is Xylometazoline hydrochloride. It is an alpha-adrenergic agonist with non-selective action. In small doses it acts on alpha1-adrenergic receptors, in large doses - on alpha2-adrenergic receptors. When in contact with the nasal mucosa, it contracts blood vessels, reduces the intensity of inflammation and exudation. Relieves the nose from redness and swelling. Facilitates breathing through the nose during rhinitis.

When used nasally, Xylometazoline almost does not enter the bloodstream. Well tolerated even in people with highly sensitive nasal mucosa.

Indications

  • Acute runny nose caused by viruses, bacteria or allergies;
  • During the phase of heavy discharge during sinusitis/sinusitis;
  • Acute inflammation of the ear (to reduce swelling at the site of communication with the nasopharynx);
  • Bleeding from the nose - rarely used, in the absence of Naphazoline;
  • Preparing the patient for a diagnostic procedure that is performed through the nose.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to drops;
  • Atrophic runny nose;
  • Pheochromocytoma;
  • Angle-closure glaucoma;
  • You cannot use the drug if you have previously had surgery on the membranes of the brain;
  • Pregnancy;
  • Children - up to two years of age.

Xylene drops are used with caution, under medical supervision, for hypertension, rapid pulse, severe atherosclerosis, angina pectoris, prostate diseases, hyperthyroidism and diabetes mellitus.

The drug can worsen the state of health in case of individual intolerance to adrenergic drugs, which is manifested by migraines, insomnia, hand tremors, and high blood pressure.

Pregnancy and lactation

Xylene is not used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. During its forced use, lactation should be interrupted.

During pregnancy, vasoconstrictors affect uteroplacental blood flow, which can cause fetal developmental delays. One-time use of the drug during pregnancy is allowed in the absence of other drops that relieve nasal congestion. During pregnancy, it should be used without exceeding therapeutically permitted doses.

Children

There are no data on restricting the drug in children. But given the dosage of Xylene produced, it can be argued that it is approved for children over two years of age.

Mode of application

For children under six years of age, drop a drop of 0.05% solution into the nose 1-2 times a day. Older children and adults can drip a 0.1% solution up to 3 times a day.

Do not use the drug more than 3 times a day and for more than 5 days. During pregnancy, drops with a small dosage can be used.

Xylene begins to act instantly, the duration of the vasoconstrictor effect is up to 10 hours.

Side effects

Drops should not be used for longer than the period specified in the instructions for use. Long-term and frequent exposure to Xylene on the nasal mucosa causes irritation, dryness, burning, and sneezing. Possible cardiac arrhythmia, palpitations, hypertension, headache, vomiting, sleep disturbance and visual disturbances.

With long-term use in large doses, depression develops.

Drug interactions

The instructions for use advise not to drip Xylene into the nose while simultaneously using antidepressants - MAO inhibitors (Phenelzine, Nialamid, Isocarboxazid, Befol, Meclobemide, etc.). The interval between the use of these medications should be at least two weeks.

Drug interactions have also been observed with tricyclic antidepressants - Amizol, Amitriptyline, Amixid, etc.

When used together with local anesthetics - Lidocaine, Novocaine, it prolongs the effect of the latter.

Analogs

Preparations in which the main active ingredient is also Xylometazoline:

  • For nose;
  • Olint;
  • Brizolin;
  • Rhinostop;
  • Otrivin;
  • Galazolin;
  • Dr. Theiss Nasal Aerosol;
  • Xymelin;
  • Xylobene;
  • Xylometazoline;
  • Farmazolin.

Overdose

Overdose is possible only with long-term treatment with large doses, or if the child has taken the drug. It manifests itself as convulsions, unstable blood pressure, depression, and rapid pulse.

In case of overdose, it is necessary to discontinue the drug, prescribe treatment to eliminate the symptoms of overdose, as well as medications that stabilize the functions of the heart and vascular system. Children need to be treated in a hospital setting.

special instructions

Before using the drug, the nasal passages must be cleared of mucus. To do this, you need to blow your nose well and rinse your nose with saline solution.

It is prohibited to use the drug for a long time.

In therapeutic doses, Xylometazoline does not reduce concentration and psychomotor speed, and therefore does not affect the ability to drive vehicles and operate precision machinery.

The description of the drug on this page is a simplified version of the text that contains the official instructions for use. This information is provided for informational purposes only and should not be used as a guide for self-medication. Before using drops, you should consult with your doctor (especially during pregnancy, in children) and study the instructions for use approved by the manufacturer.

Xylene (spray form) belongs to the category of drugs for the treatment of nasal diseases. The instructions for use highlight the following features of the medicine:

  • During pregnancy: with caution
  • When breastfeeding: with caution
  • In childhood: with caution

Package

The active ingredient is xylometazoline. Xylene is a pharmacological drug based on vasoconstrictor substances used to treat the common cold.

Composition and release form

According to the instructions, Xylene is available in the form of nasal drops.

In addition to the active substance, nasal drops also contain auxiliary components: benzalkonium chloride, disodium edetate, sodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, sodium chloride, water.

Xylene solution is produced in concentrations of 0.1% and 0.05%. In a plastic bottle (or glass) 10 ml of this drug.

Pharmacological action of Xylene

According to the instructions, Xylen has an anti-edematous effect due to its local vasoconstrictor effect. When the blood vessels of the nasal mucosa are narrowed, swelling and hyperemia are reduced, and the patency of the nasal passages is restored, which facilitates nasal breathing and relieves nasal congestion. Xylene begins to have an effect almost immediately after application, the effect lasts up to 10 hours.

Since the drug is used topically, it is practically not absorbed into the blood. Modern methods cannot detect its concentration in the blood after use.

Indications for use

Xylene is used for acute rhinitis caused by viral respiratory infections. The drug is also indicated for acute allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, and otitis media (as part of complex treatment to reduce swelling of the nasopharyngeal mucosa). Xylene is used before rhinoscopy (an endoscopic method for examining the nasal passages and nasopharynx).

Contraindications

This drug is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to its components, with severe atherosclerosis, arterial hypertension, tachycardia and glaucoma.

Xylene is contraindicated for use in patients with atrophic rhinitis, as well as in patients who have a history of surgical operations on the meninges. Children under 6 years of age are contraindicated from using a 0.1% solution of this drug; a special children's dosage (0.05% solution) should be used.

Xylen should be used with extreme caution in patients with diabetes mellitus, prostate hyperplasia, hyperthyroidism, and coronary heart disease. If there are contraindications to Xylene, you should not use this drug on your own; discuss treatment with similar medications with your doctor.

Side effect

With prolonged (or too frequent) use of Xylene, dryness and irritation of the nasopharyngeal mucosa may occur (this can be manifested by sneezing, burning, hypersecretion of mucus). Rarely, vomiting, headache, palpitations, tachycardia, increased blood pressure, arrhythmia, blurred vision, insomnia, and depression may occur. For such side effects to occur, the use of Xylene must be prolonged and in excessive doses.

Use of Xylene during pregnancy and lactation

The use of Xylene during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not recommended. The drug itself does not have a negative effect on the fetus, but it can affect the blood pressure of a pregnant woman, as well as the vascular tone of the placenta.

Directions for use and doses

Xylene should be instilled into each nasal passage (after preliminary cleansing) 1-2 drops of a 0.1% solution (for adults and children older than 18 years old) no more than 2-3 times a day.

Infants and children under 6 years of age are recommended to use a 0.05% Xylene solution, 1-2 drops in each nasal passage once/twice a day.

This drug should not be used more than 3 times a day or for more than 5 days.

Xylen overdose

In case of overdose, the above-described symptoms of side effects occur. Treatment is aimed at stopping the use of the drug and eliminating the symptoms that occur.
