Treatment of dry cough with folk remedies

To treat dry cough in folk medicine, 4 methods are used: inhalation, massage, thermal procedures, and herbal tinctures.

Inhalations

  1. Steam released from boiled potatoes. This method is considered one of the simplest and most accessible. All you need to do is boil the potatoes and drain the water.
    Then you need to cover yourself with a thick towel over the pan and breathe deeply. Potato steam is moist and warm, which is able to penetrate into the lungs, thereby causing the rapid discharge of phlegm.
  2. Inhalation with soda solution. For such inhalation it is convenient to use a nebulizer. To do this, you need 150 grams of boiling water and 30 grams of baking soda.
    It is not recommended to breathe too deeply during such inhalation. The alkaline solution softens and removes mucus.
  3. Inhalation with essential oils. The essential oil itself has antibacterial, moisturizing, and expectorant properties.
    For such inhalation, you need to heat 500 ml of water to 70 o C and add 15 drops of pine essential oil. This procedure should take no more than fifteen minutes. The effectiveness of the procedure is a severe coughing attack.
  4. Inhalation of sage with honey. For this procedure, you need to prepare a sage decoction. To do this, you need half a liter of boiling water and two tablespoons of sage.
    Let it sit for a while. When the broth has cooled, to approximately a temperature of 70 - 75 o you need to add two tablespoons of honey. You need to stir and breathe this infusion several times a day for 20 minutes.

Massage

Thermal treatments

  1. Foot bath with mustard. This bath is used only if there is no elevated body temperature. For this you need hot water, approximately 35 - 40 o and 3-4 tablespoons of mustard powder. The duration of this procedure is 30 minutes, after which you need to put on socks and go to bed.
  2. Potato compress. To do this, you need to boil 1-2 potatoes, mash and mix with milk. The consistency of such a puree should be such that it can be easily formed into a cake.
    After this, a warm cake should be placed on the chest, covered with plastic and a towel. The duration of such a compress can reach 12 hours.
  3. Cabbage and honey compress. To do this, you need to melt honey in a water bath, apply it to a cabbage leaf and apply it to your chest. After which you need to wrap it in cellophane, a towel and leave it overnight.

Types of compresses for dry cough

The main cause of bronchitis accompanied by sputum is a viral infection. The disease occurs due to damage by bacteria, and in some cases, when the body is exposed to allergens.

Now you can safely purchase excellent natural drugs that alleviate the symptoms of the disease, and in up to a few weeks allow you to completely get rid of the disease.

Safe remedies for dry cough at home

Unfortunately, today young children, as well as pregnant women, suffer from dry cough. But then the question arises: “Which products are safe for children and pregnant women?”

  1. Choosing a compress for a child directly depends on what kind of cough he has. In children, there are always two types of cough: Productive or wet and dry.
    During a wet cough, it is better for children to apply cabbage or paraffin compresses. But if it’s dry, then honey, oil, potato, alcohol, and compresses with mustard are better.
  2. An effective herbal decoction for pregnant women is from coltsfoot. The most effective compresses are cabbage, honey and potato.

As already mentioned at the beginning of the article, treatment with folk remedies simultaneously with drug therapy gives a positive result. Therefore, it is better to discuss all the desired methods with your doctor.

Modern parents know many methods, but one of the most effective is the use of oil or alcohol compresses. Compared to conventional drug therapy, cough compresses for infants are harmless to health and can eliminate the symptoms of respiratory system disease in a short time. However, lotions based on vodka or medical alcohol may not be suitable for all children, so it is important to know a few additional recipes that can replace the main ingredient.

Warming compresses for children when coughing are designed to relieve attacks of inflammation and relieve pain that often occurs when coughing. In addition, this treatment method helps eliminate phlegm in the bronchi and have a mucolytic effect. If your baby suffers from a dry cough, lotions will turn it into a productive one and facilitate the removal of mucus. Regardless of the type of inflammation, it is important to consult a doctor before applying a compress. This treatment method does not always help the patient, so it is important to eliminate all possible risks.

A compress is a healing bandage that is necessary to protect the skin and heal the wound. It has an anti-inflammatory effect on the affected organ. Regular use of lotions can replace taking certain medications and significantly improve the patient’s well-being. Treatment with compresses is classified as physiotherapeutic procedures.

Lotions with dry mustard combined with medical alcohol can cause severe irritation, which is unsafe when treating children under twelve months.

There are many forms of using lotions, but most often patients are prescribed wet and dry compresses, which have an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effect. In addition, there are cold and hot bandages that help with acute pain and have a healing effect.

For reference! When treating a cough, patients prefer warming lotions that can relieve pain and soften attacks.

Among the most popular types of compresses are: oil, water and alcohol. It is best to apply compresses for children over twelve months without any additives. They can cause allergic reactions and make the situation worse.

In addition, you can cure children's cough with the help of syrups. The most popular medications are described.

Contraindications

It is important to understand that warming bandages cannot always be applied. Compresses are prohibited if the child has an elevated body temperature and severely unwell. In addition, you should not use alcohol warming lotions during the period of acute development of inflammation.

Other main restrictions include:

  • compresses are prohibited for treating children under one year of age;
  • for various heart diseases;
  • in case of high blood pressure;
  • for benign or malignant;
  • in case of a severe allergic reaction;
  • if the baby is particularly sensitive to the main ingredients;
  • for skin diseases.

In other cases, the lotion acts as one of the methods for relieving dry cough. After the first use, patients note a reduction in non-productive cough, as well as an improvement in overall well-being.

Important! When treating with lotions, many parents use lotions with mustard added. Such treatment should be abandoned if the child is under one year old.

How to place a bandage correctly

The mechanism for setting the lotion is always the same. To do this, you will need gauze cloth, the selected ingredient, compress paper or polyethylene, cotton wool, a scarf or towel.

The compress is placed according to the following scheme:

  1. Apply an insulating layer to the treated area. To do this, use wax paper, polyethylene or compress fabric. For treating a child, any non-cellophane material is usually chosen.
  2. The first layer of gauze should be soaked in the medicine. Then fold the gauze fabric together several times and place it on the baby's sternum or back.
  3. Then you should tightly close the treated area. To do this, you can use a towel, scarf or warm scarf. In addition to the fact that the last layer has a warming effect, it is necessary to secure the lotion.
  4. The compresses last for about two hours. After this time, wipe the skin and lubricate the treated area with any baby cream.
  5. After treatment, the child should be changed into clean and dry clothes. Make sure your baby's room is warm and free of drafts.

Important! A compress without a protective layer can cause a burn.

The lotion can be applied at any time of the day, but it is best to use it in the evening when preparing for bed. If you leave the compress overnight, an improved effect is noted in the morning, but it is important not to overexpose the bandage. Parents cannot always monitor the compress at night, so this method is not recommended for treating very young children.

Many parents ask what compresses can be used for a child’s cough? For express compress can be used vinegar, honey, vodka, pure alcohol and oil. Lotions made from these ingredients are left for thirty minutes. They help eliminate signs of inflammation and significantly alleviate the child’s condition.

Vodka compress for cough for child

The most effective cough compress is considered vodka. It significantly softens cough and eliminates pain, thereby reducing the inflammatory process. To apply a lotion using vodka or medical alcohol, you should know a few basic rules.

  1. To apply an alcohol lotion to treat a child, you should dilute the liquid in clean water in a ratio of one to two. If a cough appears in a child under three years of age, the proportions should be even greater, that is, one to three.
  2. After this, soak a gauze cloth or napkin in the resulting solution, and then wring it out.
  3. Place your baby on your chest or back.
  4. Cover the area to be treated with the first insulating layer. It is necessary to protect the baby's delicate skin.
  5. After this, put a lotion soaked in alcohol and secure the bandage with gauze, a scarf or handkerchief.

For reference! Medical alcohol can be replaced with regular vodka.

You should keep this compress at least two hours. If during treatment the patient complains of severe irritation and itching, the lotion should be removed, and the treated area should be rinsed with warm water and lubricated with baby cream.

The therapeutic effect occurs immediately after treatment, but to maintain the result, compresses should be applied every other day for one week.

Butter recipe

Another popular type of treatment is an oil compress for cough. This type of physical therapy can relieve long-term dry cough and eliminate discomfort in the sternum.

To prepare an oil lotion:

  1. Melt the butter using a water bath.
  2. Dip a napkin into the mixture.
  3. Place film or compressor paper on your baby's chest, and then cover it with a cloth soaked in oil.
  4. After this, wrap the baby's chest with a bandage and a warm bandage.

This type of lotion should be kept at least three hours. It is best to leave the compress on overnight.

The medicinal effect will appear after the first time, but for therapeutic results, repeat the procedure five times. Then take a break of three days and undergo the course of treatment again.

Which method is better

There is no point in comparing these procedures, since they both are intended to treat long-term cough. However, if in the first case vodka or medical alcohol can cause a severe allergic reaction, then when treated with oil, such a side effect is practically not observed.

In addition, alcohol compresses It's better not to leave it on all night. Children usually toss and turn a lot, which can cause burns.

However, after applying an alcohol dressing, the therapeutic effect appears much faster. In addition to the fact that this method eliminates pain, it softens cough and has a pronounced anti-inflammatory effect.

Therefore, when choosing a recipe The individual characteristics of the baby’s body should be taken into account. It is best to trust professionals in this matter and not make independent decisions.

Conclusion

Compresses have a pronounced therapeutic effect after the first use, but to consolidate the results, the bandages should be worn every day for about two hours. During therapy, the patient should not ignore standard treatment methods and undergo. Otherwise, there is a risk of developing a chronic cough.

Even with a large selection of medications, cough compresses for children are always popular.

They quickly and effectively solve the main problem of treatment at home: the transition of a dry cough into a wet form and the rapid removal of pathogenic sputum.

Before applying a warm compress to a child for a cough, you need to understand the rules of application, possible contraindications and the choice of components for applications.

How to make a cough compress for children?

There are several types of compresses, of which those that have a warming effect are used for treatment. Parents often resort to this method of eliminating cough because they are not always confident in medications, which may cause side effects and complications.

In order to make a compress, you need cotton wool, a bandage or gauze and material that will serve as the basis for a warming compress. It can be different: honey, curd mass, boiled potatoes, salt, alcohol, various fats. Compresses are used for wet and dry coughs.

Doctors also have a positive attitude towards this method of treatment, although they point out that it should not completely replace drug therapy. A properly used therapeutic bandage does not cause drug dependence and significantly saves money.

Operating principle

An effective compress when a child coughs dilates blood vessels, activates blood circulation and cleanses the lungs. Under the influence of the procedure, the cough quickly passes from a dry form to a wet one, which is always an indicator of the success of treatment.

Warming the ENT organs also stimulates the production of interferon, which effectively destroys pathogens.

Precautionary measures. What do you need to remember?

Although compresses in general have a well-deserved reputation as a safe remedy, you should always remember to take precautions when using them.
Here are examples of the most important of them:

  • do not use this method of treatment if the baby has wounds or other damage to the skin, this can cause inflammation and infection;
  • It is not used as a medicinal product for children under one year of age, since the skin of infants is still very delicate and vulnerable;
  • a therapeutic bandage is applied to the chest, to the back, to the left or right of the throat, but in no case to the heart area;
  • do not use honey as an application for the procedure if the child has previously had allergic reactions to this product;
  • For greater safety, children aged 1 to 2 years are not recommended to apply medicinal components directly to the baby’s skin; however, for protection they should use a thin diaper or gauze;
  • The best time for manipulation is to do it at night.

A properly made compress does not cause irritation, itching or redness of the skin. The duration of its presence can vary greatly and range from several hours to the whole night. It is not advisable to apply bandages for more than five days.

Staging rules

This treatment method will not have the expected effect if the therapeutic bandage is used incorrectly. To prevent this from happening, you must follow the following rules:

Apply it to pre- lubricated baby's skin. Vaseline, baby cream or any vegetable oil (olive, linseed, sesame) are suitable for this.

Prepare three layers in advance. The first layer is a piece of bandage, gauze or cotton wool, the second (insulating) is polyethylene or paper, and the third is a warm scarf, handkerchief or towel.

After soaking the gauze or bandage prepared solution, the bandage is applied and fixed with waterproofing material. As a rule, this is polyethylene, film or wax paper.

The outer layer is used for insulation. Its role can be played by a woolen scarf or shawl, a terry towel or a down scarf. This “insulation” must be large enough to reliably cover the baby’s entire chest to effectively retain heat.

During the procedure you need ensure that the baby remains calm in bed under a warm blanket or blanket.

After applying the compress The skin is wiped dry and lightly lubricated with baby cream.

The child is being changed into dry clothes and make sure that the room is free of drafts and warm.

Attention

If, while the compress is on the throat or back, the child complains of pain, burning or other discomfort, the bandage must be removed.

Before deciding to use a new application material, it is better to consult your doctor.

Is it possible to make a compress at a fever?

With a slight increase in body temperature (up to 37.5 C), the use of a warming procedure is acceptable, and the general condition of the child must be taken into account. If the temperature exceeds the mentioned mark, preference should be given to other treatment methods.

When are compresses contraindicated?

The use of compresses is a prohibited procedure when it comes to infants under one year of age. The child still has very delicate skin that can be easily damaged; it is also impossible to predict what the baby’s reaction will be to a procedure that is incomprehensible to him. Contraindications also include:

  • high body temperature;
  • diseases of the cardiovascular system;
  • the presence of rashes or inflamed wounds on the body;
  • diseases of the upper respiratory tract in the acute stage;
  • the child's tendency to allergic reactions.

There are certain restrictions in the choice of applications. For example, alcohol dressings are not recommended for preschool children.

The correct choice of components according to symptoms: for dry or wet cough

A dry cough is always a great danger; with a wet cough, sputum easily separates and comes out. If parents decide to use a compress in treatment, it is even better to consult a doctor on this issue.

For dry skin, the most effective products are those based on honey, boiled potatoes, and vegetable oil. A compress with an application of cabbage leaves or cottage cheese helps remove phlegm from a wet cough.

Cough compress for infants

Cough compresses begin to be applied to infants only when they are one year old. Bandages must be applied with great care so as not to damage the skin or frighten the child. Among the applications, the choice is mainly vegetable oils or honey.

The selected components should not be applied directly to the skin. Recipes containing alcohol, vodka or mustard are undesirable. The duration of exposure of the product to an infant should not exceed 15-20 minutes.

Potato cough compress

Potatoes have always been among the leaders among folk remedies for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. It can be used as a component for a medicinal dressing. Potato cakes retain heat for a long time without causing allergies.

Potato applications can be used in the treatment of bronchitis, laryngitis, sore throat and other ENT diseases. The procedure algorithm is as follows:

  1. 2-3 medium-sized potatoes are boiled in their skins.
  2. Grind the potatoes to a puree and add 2-3 tablespoons of vegetable oil and vodka.
  3. A cake is formed from the resulting material.
  4. Wrap the cake in a diaper or thin paper.
  5. Place the cake on the child's chest, covering it with polyethylene and insulating it with a layer of cotton wool and a warm scarf.
  6. The cake is removed after 3-4 hours, wiping the child’s skin with a damp cloth and applying a thin layer of cream to it.

During the procedure, you need to ensure that the baby is warm. A healing cake can be made from a mixture of water, honey and flour. This method of treatment is supported by the famous pediatrician Evgeny Komarovsky.

Honey compress for cough for children

Unless the baby is allergic to honey, dressings based on this sweet product can be used for treatment. To prepare it, honey is heated in a water bath and applied to gauze folded in several layers. The material is applied to the throat or chest, fixed with wax paper and insulated with a scarf.

It is recommended to keep this bandage from 30 minutes to 2-3 hours, depending on the severity of the cough and the age of the baby. Application can be repeated during the day. To enhance the healing effect, you can add a little grated raw potato to the melted honey.

With cabbage and honey

For this recipe, only fresh cabbage leaves are suitable, as they can release juice. Flabby leaves have already lost their medicinal properties and there is no point in using them.

The leaves are placed in hot water for a few minutes, then dried with a towel and intensively crushed until the juice appears. Liquid heated honey is spread over the entire length of the sheet, then applied to the baby’s back or chest, avoiding the heart area.

The cabbage leaf should fit well to the body. This application can be repeated twice a day, or even better, leave it overnight. In the morning you need to remove any remaining honey from the skin. If the attacks are severe, use several leaves.

Compress with Dimexide for cough

Dimexide cannot be used in its pure form for treatment. It is diluted with saline solution or plain water in a ratio of 1:4. Dimexide has a warming effect and eliminates inflammation.

The therapeutic effect is noticeable after 3-4 procedures. Before use, it is recommended to warm the mixture and apply it to gauze. To prevent the product from spreading, place a napkin on the gauze under the polyethylene.

The first procedure with Dimexide should not exceed 40 minutes. The skin must be thoroughly dried after the procedure. The duration of the next manipulation can be increased to 50-60 minutes, but you cannot leave the compress overnight, as parents sometimes do, to avoid skin damage.

Warming based on Dimexide is contraindicated for:

  • high body temperature;
  • chronic diseases of the heart, kidneys and liver;
  • diseases of the endocrine system;
  • proneness to allergies;
  • individual intolerance to the drug;
  • child under 12 years of age.

The product contains aminophylline, titrazoline, calcium gluconate and aloe extract. Eufillin tends to cause side effects; if the child complains of feeling unwell during the procedure, it should be stopped and other methods of treatment should be sought.

Vodka compress for cough for child

They belong to the most effective warming compresses that can be recommended for a child over 2 years old. Children over 7 years old can use diluted alcohol instead of vodka. The substance is heated, gauze is soaked in it, covered with polyethylene and the child is wrapped in a blanket.

Vodka compress is contraindicated if the child has problems with the thyroid gland. It should be used with caution, avoiding leaving the bandage on the child's throat for a long time.

Remember that for manipulation by children under 3 years old, vodka must be diluted in a ratio of at least 1:1.

With honey and vodka

For such a compress you need to take half a glass of vodka and a tablespoon of honey. Both ingredients are slightly heated, mixed, and a piece of gauze is moistened in the resulting mixture. After squeezing it slightly, it is placed on the child’s back, secured with film and wrapped in a scarf or warm blanket. This composition is not suitable for children under 7 years of age.

From honey and mustard

This compress cures severe coughs in the evening and is approved for use by children over 2 years old. Honey, dry mustard and heated sunflower oil are taken in equal proportions, mixed and distributed over a piece of gauze.

The material is applied to the back and chest. Its effect can be compared to the therapeutic effect of mustard plasters, but a honey compress is safer because it does not burn the skin.

From cottage cheese

100 g of cottage cheese is mixed with a tablespoon of honey. The resulting mixture is kneaded well, slightly heated and applied to the back and chest of the small patient. The bandage can be left on overnight.

Oily

For a dry, barking cough, warming can be done using regular vegetable oil. It is heated by placing it in a water bath, and a towel or cotton napkin is immediately moistened with the resulting mass.

The material is wrapped around the baby's upper body, avoiding the heart area. After applying the remaining two layers, the child is tightly covered with a blanket. It is more advisable to apply such a compress before going to bed, then you can safely leave it overnight.

It is possible to prepare a dressing based on camphor oil. To do this, the oil is mixed with goat fat, honey and a few drops of camphor alcohol. The compress is recommended for children over 2 years old.

Salt

Salt is rich in antioxidants and beneficial minerals that successfully fight the negative effects of pathogens. Saline solutions work effectively, although not very quickly. To prepare them, take 90 g of salt per 1 liter of water heated to 45-50 C. You can use sea salt instead of regular salt.

When using such a product, care must be taken not to burn the child’s skin. Before the procedure, you need to lubricate the baby's back and chest with baby cream or vegetable oil.

Compress for bronchitis in children

The use of compresses is widely used in the treatment of bronchitis, since cough is one of the main symptoms of the disease. Applications with badger fat are very effective.

The substance has an anti-inflammatory effect, strengthens the immune system, supplies the body with fatty acids, vitamins A and B. Before applying the application, it is advisable to massage the baby’s back to warm up the skin.

Badger fat is distributed over paper or cloth, a napkin is applied to the compress and the skin is insulated with a towel or scarf. The application of compresses can be combined with rubbing. The duration of treatment is several days.

– a frequent companion to many diseases, primarily respiratory diseases. Essentially, to get rid of a cough, you must eliminate the cause of its occurrence. A persistent cough completely exhausts a person, forcing him to waste energy, preventing him from sleeping and staying awake. Coughing attacks are especially difficult for children. There are many traditional medicine recipes aimed at getting rid of coughs: these are herbal infusions and decoctions, inhalations, foot baths, etc., but perhaps the most popular treatment is cough compresses for children. There are several types of compresses: cold and hot, alcohol and oil, dry and water.

Warming compresses for children

The effect of a warming compress is based on increased blood circulation in the area where it is applied, due to which a decrease in inflammation is observed.

Vodka compress for a child

Vodka is heated to human body temperature, prepared cotton cloth or gauze is dipped into it, wrung out a little and applied to the child’s body in the chest and back area. Cellophane or wax paper is placed on top. A vodka compress can also be applied to the throat of a child over two years of age. Under no circumstances should such compresses be used by persons suffering from thyroid diseases!

Honey compress for cough for children

Honey is dissolved in a water bath, spread on cotton cloth folded in several layers, and placed on the chest and back, wrapped with cellophane on top.

You can spread honey dissolved in a water bath on the baby’s chest and back, put cabbage leaves on top, and only then cover it with cellophane and wrap it in a scarf.

A very effective remedy for hysterical bronchitis cough is as follows: slightly heat two teaspoons of badger or sheep tail fat, add a couple of drops of purified kerosene, mix thoroughly and rub the baby’s chest, back and legs.

Potato compress for baby

Boil two medium-sized potatoes in their jackets, mix the mashed potatoes with a tablespoon of warm vegetable oil. The resulting mass is laid out on film and applied to the chest and back for several hours. You can use alcohol or turpentine instead of vegetable oil.

Oil compresses for children

Oil compresses eliminate coughing attacks and make breathing easier. They are usually made at night, using olive oil with the addition of essential oils: eucalyptus, coniferous trees, lavender in a ratio of 10:1.

How to make a compress for a child?

Young parents often experience difficulties, not knowing how to properly apply a compress to their child. The compress is made in three layers. The inner layer is gauze or soft cotton fabric, soaked in a medicinal solution. The middle - insulating layer is made of compress paper or cellophane. The purpose of the outer layer is to warm the part of the body on which the compress is applied. The insulation can be a terry towel, a woolen scarf or a layer of cotton wool. The compress is placed on the back and chest, and in the area of the heart the first layer soaked in the medicinal agent should be absent.

It is advisable to keep the compress on the child’s throat for 3-6 hours, after which remove it and apply a dry bandage – a warm scarf or handkerchief – to the warmed area. During the period when a warming compress is applied, it is better for the child to remain in bed, excluding active movement.

  • The health of the family is in the hands of a woman - a Simple Queen in the domestic kingdom

    Hello, mommies. I didn’t think that September would be such a “fruitful” year for children’s colds, but the fact is obvious - recently the site’s mailbox has been receiving several letters a day from young mothers, clarifying, doubting and openly worrying about their children. The questions mainly concern infants and children up to two years old - how to make a cough compress for a small child, how long to hold him, how to take the child out for a walk, etc.

    In this article, I decided to give answers to the most frequently asked questions and describe in detail how exactly I make these very compresses, and in general, how I now treat my children (especially the youngest). I will not hide that the insidious virus has reached us too - in the school where the older students study, ARVI is already “walking” with might and main - almost half of all students and even part of the teaching staff are sick. Common symptoms:

    • severe runny nose;
    • pain and sore throat;
    • cough.

    It is not surprising that the older children “brought” the disease into the house and the younger one reacted instantly - first with snot, then wheezing and coughing. These days I had a lot of conservation, and I missed the moment when everything could have ended happily with just rhinitis. All I had to do between persistently rolling up the jars was to rinse the younger one’s nose and drip it with melted propolis ointment. The runny nose went away, but the infection managed to penetrate further, and the inflammatory process began - wheezing, cough, fever.

    For the older ones, a day of active rinsing of the nose with salt water with iodine (a third of a teaspoon of salt and 2 drops of iodine per glass of water), two drops of propolis ointment and a compote of frozen black elderberries with chamomile was enough. I also poured a third of a teaspoon of propolis tincture into the cup of compote and added a little propolis ointment (about a quarter of a teaspoon).

    But the younger one, of course, cannot be cured so easily - little colds are taken seriously, and they need to be treated more persistently. We quickly got rid of the copious snot by washing and instilling ointment + I diluted his favorite cocoa with a light decoction of chamomile (I added about a third of a cup of chamomile decoction). Let me note that when I have a runny nose, I cook cocoa without milk, because milk provokes the production of mucus and the snot will flow even more - tested!

    Next in line was a cough and fever. The latter “gave up” to warm elderberry compote with chamomile and propolis ointment, but I personally prefer to treat a cough with wheezing and “bubbling” with compresses with potatoes. Compress with potatoes for a child’s cough: how to do it

    Frankly, at first, when mothers started asking about such compresses, I was quite surprised: what could be simpler? I boiled the potatoes, mashed them, put them in a diaper and warmed up the baby. However, upon reflection, I remembered myself 15 years ago, when my daughter was born - no one told me or showed me how to actually do this, I had to learn on my own and select the best options. But then this was explained by the lack of information - the books didn’t write about home treatment, my mother didn’t treat me like that, she trusted doctors more, her friends didn’t know either, pediatricians, of course, didn’t want to hear about any potatoes, cottage cheese and cabbages. But since now there is a miracle of the world - the Internet, then why don’t I tell young mothers in detail how I make these same potato cough compresses for my child. Maybe it will be useful to someone.

    Making a compress: all the nuances step by step

    So. I boil potatoes at the rate of 3-4 for the breasts and the same amount for the back (for the bronchi area). I cook the tubers until they are completely cooked, until cracks even appear, then it is convenient to mash them. Attention! I don’t peel potatoes, I don’t mash potatoes, I don’t mash them in a saucepan! I place the hot tubers on a clean natural towel or cloth:

    Now our task is to quickly and efficiently wrap the potatoes in cloth so that the pieces do not accidentally fall out and burn the baby. To do this we do this:

    Or like this:

    We wrap the resulting pocket across the seams in an old, clean woolen scarf (my version) or a shawl or in any warm, clean thing. You get such convenient bags of hot potatoes.

    At first, the potatoes are still very hot, so I place a terry towel in 2-4 layers (depending on the temperature) between the baby’s back and the compress and 2 layers of a towel between the compress and the breast. Since the baby lies on his back and the entire weight of the body presses on the lower compress, it warms up more. Therefore, for the lower compress we make more layers of fabric.

    We dress the child in a shirt and put a compress on the chest and under the back (in the area of the shoulder blades). Cover with a blanket. If this is a baby, then we take him in our arms right with the blanket and hold him for 15-20 minutes. If the baby is older, then it all depends on the child’s temperament: calm children usually fall asleep, and lively children begin to be capricious and break out. You will have to sit next to such children, or use a trick - turn on cartoons, tell fairy tales, etc., the main thing is that the child stays warm for at least 20 minutes (it can be longer if he is sleeping). Until the potatoes are warm.

    Then a very important condition: After the compress, the child MUST be changed into dry clothes! This is a very important moment - if this is not done, the child can easily get pneumonia!

    I clarify the nuances that are often asked in letters

    1. I make compresses if the child’s temperature is not higher than 39. If the temperature is high, I first relieve the inflammation with herbs (usually this takes a day, sometimes two).
    2. I don’t peel or cut potatoes, I don’t cook mashed potatoes, I don’t add anything. I washed it, cooked it, put it on a cloth and immediately crushed it. I came up with this method myself: whole tubers retain heat better, crushed and quickly wrapped, they can warm up many times better than boiled in pieces, and even more so, mashed into puree.
    3. I never use cellophane, bags, films, foil - only fabric!
    4. After the compress, I lubricate the back and breasts with either heated camphor oil or melted goat fat with propolis tincture. I insulate it with cotton wool. I also make sure to lubricate my feet and put cotton socks on my feet.
    5. I do not lubricate the child if the compress was done with a temperature (up to 39). Then I just change my clothes and put him to bed.
    6. I apply the compress not only at night, but also during the day (if the cough is very strong, wheezing in the chest, etc.). Then we don’t go outside and protect ourselves from drafts (in the summer you can go outside 3 hours after the compress, but if it’s not windy).
    7. For bronchitis, for the first 2-3 days I make compresses from potatoes, then I switch to salt warming (I fry the salt in a frying pan, pour it into bags, tie it, and then continue in the same way as with potatoes). Usually the entire treatment takes 5-7 days.

    That's the whole simple science of how to make a cough compress for a child. There is nothing complicated, and at the same time it is very difficult. It is very difficult to be attentive, confident, observe and draw conclusions. Be patient, learn to read all recommendations carefully, listen to doctors and conduct a dialogue with them. Learn the most important thing - patience. Your children will grow up, childhood illnesses will become a thing of the past, and many worries will go away on their own. In the meantime, your child is still a toddler, focus on keeping him in excellent health.

    All the best!
