    Pyramid of Djoser

It’s definitely worth deciding on this trip, if only out of curiosity. After all, the Pyramid of Djoser is recognized as the oldest surviving Egyptian pyramid. Yes, yes, this is the first pyramid of Egypt, and it was built in honor of the ruler Djoser by the architect and close associate of the pharaoh Imhotep.

The pyramids of Egypt are a unique architectural monument that has remained for centuries thanks to mysterious builders who managed to create structures so strong that no natural disasters or destructive wars could completely destroy these ancient Egyptian necropolises. The mystery of the pyramids has not yet been solved: it is impossible to speak with certainty either about the method of their construction, or about who acted as the main labor force. Now there are about 118 pyramids in Egypt, the largest of which were built during the reign of the III and IV dynasties of the pharaohs, that is, during the period of the so-called Old Kingdom. There are two types of pyramids: stepped and regular. The most ancient structures are considered to be of the first type. For example, the pyramid of Pharaoh Djoser, dating back to 2650 BC. e.

Necropolis translated from Greek means “city of the dead” and is a cemetery, usually located on the outskirts of the city. Egyptian pyramids - one of the varieties of this type of burial - served as monumental tombs for the pharaohs.

What do we know about the pyramids of Egypt?

They first learned about the pyramids thanks to the ancient Greek historian Herodotus, who lived in the 5th century BC. Traveling around Egypt, he was amazed by the famous pyramids of Giza and immediately ranked one of them, dedicated to Cheops, among the seven wonders of the world. Moreover, it was Herodotus who created the legend about how these structures were built. As soon as the pyramids became the object of study by scientists, and this happened only two hundred years ago, this legend immediately became a historical truth, the authenticity of which was refuted not so long ago.

How the ancient pyramids were built

Not as much has reached our time intact as we would like. Numerous vandals who robbed the pyramids for the treasures hidden inside, and local residents who broke out stone blocks to build palaces and mosques, destroyed part of the external and internal appearance. Thus, the Pink or Northern Pyramid from Dahshur (26 km south of Cairo) got its name because of the color of the stone, turning pink in the rays of the setting Sun. However, she wasn't always like this. Previously, the structure was covered with white limestone, which was entirely used for the construction of houses in Cairo.

For a long time it was believed that people who disturbed the peace of the pharaohs were condemned to death by the ancient gods. This was confirmed by the legend about the curse of Pharaoh Tutankhamun, according to which everyone who participated in the opening of the grave was supposed to die within a few years. And indeed, by 1929 (the tomb was opened in 1922), 22 people, one way or another involved in the autopsy, died. Whether the cause was the magic of Ancient Egypt or the poison placed in the sarcophagus during burial is anyone's guess.

It is believed that the famous Great Sphinx, which lies near the pyramids of Giza, is the guardian of the peace of the buried pharaohs.

Architecture and internal structure of the pyramids

The pyramids were only part of the ritual and funerary complex. Next to each of them there were two temples, one nearby and the other much lower, so that its foot was washed by the waters of the Nile. The pyramids and temples were connected by alleys. An analogue of an alley of a similar plan can be seen in Luxor. The famous Luxor and Karnak temples were united by an avenue of sphinxes that has partially survived to this day. The pyramids of Giza practically did not preserve their temples and alleys: only the lower temple of Khafre, the pharaoh of the IV dynasty, remained, for a long time considered the temple of the Great Sphinx.

The internal structure of the pyramids implied the obligatory presence of a chamber where the sarcophagus with a mummy was located, and cut passages to this chamber. Sometimes religious texts were placed there. Thus, the interior of the pyramids in Saqqara, an Egyptian village 30 km from Cairo, contained the oldest works of funeral literature that have come down to us.

It is believed that the famous Great Sphinx, which lies near the pyramids of Giza, is the guardian of the peace of the buried pharaohs. The ancient Egyptian name of this first monumental sculpture in the world has not reached our time. Only the Greek version of the designation remains in history. Medieval Arabs called the Sphinx "the father of horror."

Modern Egyptologists suggest that the construction of the pyramids was carried out in several stages. Moreover, sometimes the size of the tomb during the creation process increased several times in comparison with the original project. The pharaohs built their tomb for many years. Only ground work and leveling the site for the future structure required at least ten. It took Pharaoh Cheops twenty years to build the largest pyramid to date. The workers who built the tombs were not slaves tortured to death. Moreover, archaeological excavations have shown that they were kept in fairly decent conditions, treated and fed normally. However, it is still unknown exactly how the huge stone blocks got to the very top. What is clear is that construction techniques have changed over time, and later structures are built differently from the first.

At the end of the 20th century, architects established that the pyramids are perfect structures, with mathematically correct proportions.

Why did the ancient Egyptians build pyramids, how were these grandiose and mysterious creations of human hands created. Many secrets have not yet been revealed; there are more questions than answers. Perhaps the rulers of those times wanted to emphasize the majesty of the era, confirm the constancy of their power, and show their closeness to the gods.

First buildings

From the end of the 4th millennium BC. Pharaohs were buried in truncated structures - small stone buildings (mastabas), which were held together with clay mortar. Today, such structures look like shapeless piles of stones that do not carry any architectural value.

The history of the pyramids - the most unusual buildings of ancient Egypt - began in 2780-2760 BC, during the reign of Pharaoh Djoser, who completely changed the architectural style of the tombs. His new tomb consisted of as many as 6 mastabas built on top of each other. The narrowest one was at the top, the widest one was at the bottom. This type of building was a stepped structure. Its height was just over 60 meters, and its perimeter was 115 by 125 m.

The construction of pyramids in ancient Egypt was carried out in a special architectural style that reigned for two hundred years. Its developer and designer was the famous vizier Imhotep. The pyramids were built in a different form. For example, the period of the reign of Pharaoh Snofru was marked by the creation of two unique pyramids of ancient Egypt - broken and pink:

  1. In the first, the angle of inclination of the walls from the base of the building to its middle is 54° 31′, and then it changes to 43° 21′. There are many versions explaining this strange form of construction. The main one is that the pharaoh's death was sudden, so the workers made the slope steeper to speed up the construction process. There are other opinions on this matter. For example, that it was a trial version created for the sake of an “experiment.”
  2. The second got its name due to the color of the blocks that were used for construction. The stone was a pale pink shade, and at sunset it became bright pink. Initially, the outer cladding was white, but over time the coating gradually peeled off, revealing pink limestone - the material from which the structure was laid.

But still, the most famous are those structures that proudly rise on the Giza plateau. These three majestic pyramids of impressive size are famous all over the world.

The largest pyramid

Its other name is the pyramid of Khufu. This is one of the most famous and largest buildings in the whole world. Let's make a brief description of it. When was the Cheops pyramid built? It was built near the city of Giza (currently a suburb of Cairo). Construction of the largest pyramid began on August 23, 2480 BC. For its construction, 100 thousand people were used. The first 10 years were required to build the road along which the giant blocks of stones were delivered. It took another 20 years to build the structure itself.

Attention! The Pyramid of Cheops amazes with its scale. Today its height is 137 meters, but this was not always the case, since over time the lining was worn away and part of the base was covered with sand. Initially it was 10 meters higher.

147 meters is equal to the length of the side of the base, made in the shape of a square. According to research, more than 2 million lime blocks were used for construction, the average weight of one of them is 2.5 tons. Each block fits perfectly to the neighboring one and is raised to a certain height. The entrance can be found on the north side of the building, at a height of just over 15 meters. There are stone slabs laid out around it, reminiscent of an arch.

It is still unknown how exactly the Egyptians managed not only to lift the blocks, but also to fit them perfectly together. There are no even the slightest gaps between the blocks. Some are sure that they did not lift the blocks - people simply pushed the limestone, brought it to a powdery state, after which they removed the moisture, and so it turned into cement, which was poured into pre-created formwork. After this, water, crushed stone and stone were added - in this way monolithic blocks arose.

The stepped structure served several purposes: it was used as a sundial, a seasonal calendar and a reference point for geodetic measurements.

Little is known about who built the largest Egyptian pyramid. The architect was the vizier of the pharaoh named Cheops Hemiun. He was involved in design and was the supervisor of the work, but did not have time to see his brainchild, as he died shortly before the completion of construction.

Attention! Today there is no exact information that the tomb of Cheops is located inside. However, it is believed that such buildings were part of ritual burial complexes.

Chamber inside Khufu's pyramid

There are three chambers inside: the top one is the royal burial chamber and is lined with granite blocks, each weighing 60 tons. This chamber is located at a height of 43 meters from the base. There is also an ascending corridor and the queen's chambers. In the burial pit at the beginning of the 20th century, two engineers dug a well where, in their opinion, there should have been a hidden burial chamber.

However, their efforts were in vain: it later turned out that the construction of the chamber was not completed. Instead, the burial chambers were arranged in the center, they are located one above the other.

Quite recently, using muon radiography technology, it was possible to find a previously unknown room. It was calculated that its length is 30 meters and its width is 2 meters, and it is located right in the center of the building. Scientists are aiming to drill a small 3-centimeter hole to launch a mini-robot inside and explore the found room, since it is not yet known what is in it and what purposes it serves.

Today there is almost nothing left of the cladding - the residents of Cairo decided that it would be “more necessary” for the construction of their houses, and stole it from their homes. However, there are remains of white limestone on the nearby Pyramid of Khafre, which is slightly smaller in size.

Second largest building

Its height is 143.5 meters. If you believe the legends, then it was crowned with a granite pyramidion decorated with gold. There is no information about why it is no longer there and where it is now. Khafre spent 40 years creating the tomb for himself. It was built using the same technology as the previous one, but is located on a higher hill, and its slope is steeper, which makes the structure inaccessible and difficult even for professional climbers. At the moment, climbing to the top is prohibited in order to preserve the remains of the old cladding.

The protective material granite was used inside and outside the pyramid, but it was not used in the burial chamber. At the moment, the condition of the building is assessed as good, despite the fact that its size has decreased slightly. The blocks, made of limestone and weighing a couple of tons each, are attached to each other so tightly that not a sheet of paper or even a hair can be inserted between them.

The youngest of the three, the height is 62 meters. At the same time, in some photographs, tourists manage to choose an angle so that she looks the tallest. The ancient building has been preserved in good condition and is open to the public. Starting from this building, large tombs were no longer built. Scientists believe that by that time the decline of the era of great structures had begun.

Attention! An interesting feature of the Mykerinus pyramid is that the largest stone block in it weighs at least 200 tons.

Other architectural elements

Later, the pharaohs stopped creating grandiose structures. Thus, Pharaoh Userkaf ordered the construction of a building in Saqqara, the height of which is 44.5 meters. At the moment it looks like a pile of stones that has nothing in common with an architectural structure. The same applies to other buildings. In total, about 100 pyramids were built in Egypt. Their appearance is the same - only the height and volume change.

1.Pyramids on the Kola Peninsula

The Kola Peninsula is located in the north-west of the European part of Russia, in the Murmansk region. It is washed by the Barents and White Seas. Area about 100 thousand square meters. km. In its north there is tundra vegetation, to the south there is forest-tundra and taiga. The climate of the peninsula is moderately cold. Frosts and snowfall are possible even in summer. Strong winds (up to 45-55 m/s) are frequent on the coast, and prolonged snowstorms occur in winter. The relief of the Kola Peninsula consists of depressions, terraces, mountains, and plateaus. The peninsula's mountain ranges rise more than 800 meters above sea level. The plains of the Kola Peninsula are occupied by swamps and numerous lakes.

On the Kola Peninsula, archaeological excavations have resumed to discover pyramids that are at least 2 times older than the Egyptian ones, and it is still unknown who built them. Amazing pyramids and huge stone slabs, made artificially from 9,000 to 40,000 years ago, which were discovered on the Kola Peninsula, are a strong argument in favor of the existence of an ancient civilization in these places. The most ancient pyramids in the world, discovered on the Kola Peninsula, confirm the existence of the legendary Hyperborea. The Kola Peninsula has recently become a Mecca for researchers and hunters of scientific discoveries.

In 2009, to the previously discovered northern “proto-Egyptian” pyramids of the Kola Peninsula, the pyramids of Lake Ladoga and the Great Pyramid of the Urals (as Hyperborea researchers call it, which remains so mysterious and mysterious due to its inaccessibility), the ancient pyramids of the White Sea region were added. In the summer of 2010, on the Kola Peninsula, researcher Igor Gusev identified an ancient step pyramid made of stones. Its approximate height is 80 meters.

Sopka Chernaya (Kara-Dag) is the highest “pyramid” in the vicinity of Krasnoyarsk. This is a long extinct volcano. In the early 90s, a group of archaeologists studied the sites of primitive man and came to the conclusion that the trihedron of the mountain with the destroyed western slope consists of stones folded artificially. An increase in background radiation was also discovered in the mountain area, but the reason for this phenomenon is still a mystery.

In the center of Krasnoyarsk there is Mount Kum-Tigei (Karaulnaya), on the top of which stands the Church of the Martyr Paraskovya, and at the foot there was once a fort of Krasny Yar. The famous explorer of Siberia Semyon Remezov, who studied the surroundings of the fort in the 17th century, suggested that many of the hills and mountains surrounding the settlement could well be of man-made origin.

3.An analogue of the pyramids in Rostov-on-Don

No matter how paradoxical it may seem, there is an analogue of the pyramids in Rostov. This is a Neolithic fortress known only to a narrow circle of scientists, sometimes called the Sanctuary of Arius, or the Aryan Temple. This is a grandiose structure in terms of its size, age and significance in the history of human civilization. In terms of age, this structure is at least a thousand years older than the pyramids. However, the mathematical model of this unique architectural complex is not inferior in its harmony to the most important of the wonders of the world, which are the pyramids. Like the pyramids, the Aryan Temple was built according to the principle of the Golden Ratio. However, its design reflects the dependence of the “Phi” proportions on the “Pi” proportions, and not vice versa, as we see in the design of the pyramids. This circumstance forces us to take a fresh look at the purpose of the pyramids, which is the main guideline in the search for the keys to their secrets.

4. Pyramids of Crimea

In the spring of 2001, seven giant pyramids were found, stretching along the southern coast of Crimea in a straight line from Sevastopol to Foros.

Scientists believe that these mysterious structures are one and a half to two thousand years older than the Egyptian ones and are the same age as the Tibetan and Mexican pyramids. Based on these Crimean finds, many well-known scientists of the world are already inclined to believe that geophysicists and archaeologists have stumbled upon the remains of an ancient civilization, which in its development was significantly ahead of ours.

5. Pyramids in Lugansk and Poltava regions

1) Several years ago, huge pyramids, very similar to Egyptian ones, were discovered in the Lugansk region, however, the right of these stone mounds to be called pyramids is still controversial among scientists. This is the so-called Marl ridge near the city of Perevalsk.

2) But we can say for sure: there are really only three such unique ancient monuments as pyramids - tombs in all of Europe: one was built in Rome for Gaius Cestius, and the other two are actually located on Poltava soil. The first of them rises in the village of Komendantovka, Kobelyaksky district,

and the second is the highlight of the palace and park complex of the national historical and local history museum of the ancient village of Berezovaya Rudka, in the Piryatinsky district.

6. Other pyramids in Russia

The first wonder of the world of all time, one of the main structures of our planet, a place full of secrets and mysteries, a point of constant pilgrimage for tourists - the Egyptian pyramids and in particular the Cheops pyramid.

The construction of giant pyramids, of course, was far from easy. Enormous efforts of a large number of people were made to deliver stone blocks to the Giza or Saqqara plateau, and later to the Valley of the Kings, which became the new necropolis of the pharaohs.

At the moment, there are about a hundred discovered pyramids in Egypt, but discoveries continue, and their number is constantly increasing. At different times, one of the 7 wonders of the world meant different pyramids. Some meant all the pyramids of Egypt as a whole, some the pyramids near Memphis, some the three large pyramids of Giza, and most critics recognized exclusively the largest pyramid of Cheops.

Afterlife of Ancient Egypt

One of the central moments in the life of the ancient Egyptians was religion, which shaped the entire culture as a whole. Particular attention was paid to the afterlife, perceived as a clear continuation of earthly life. That is why preparation for life after death began long before death and was set as one of the main life tasks.

According to ancient Egyptian belief, man had several souls. The soul of Ka acted as a double of the Egyptian, whom he was to meet in the afterlife. The soul of Ba contacted the person himself and left his body after death.

Religious life of the Egyptians and the god Anubis

At first, it was believed that only the pharaoh had the right to life after death, but he could bestow this “immortality” on his entourage, who were usually buried next to the tomb of the ruler. Ordinary people were not destined to enter the world of the dead, the only exceptions being slaves and servants, whom the pharaoh “took” with him, and who were depicted on the walls of the great tomb.

But for a comfortable life after death, the deceased had to be provided with everything necessary: food, household utensils, servants, slaves and much more necessary for the average pharaoh. They also tried to preserve the person’s body so that Ba’s soul could later connect with him again. Therefore, in matters of body preservation, embalming and the creation of complex pyramid tombs were born.

The first pyramid in Egypt. Pyramid of Djoser

Speaking about the construction of pyramids in Ancient Egypt in general, it is worth mentioning the beginning of their history. The very first pyramid in Egypt was built about five thousand years ago on the initiative of Pharaoh Djoser. It is in these 5 thousand years that the age of the pyramids in Egypt is estimated. The construction of the Pyramid of Djoser was led by the famous and legendary Imhotep, who was even deified in later centuries.

Pyramid of Djoser

The entire complex of the building being erected occupied an area of 545 by 278 meters. The perimeter was surrounded by a 10-meter wall with 14 gates, only one of which was real. In the center of the complex was the pyramid of Djoser with sides 118 by 140 meters. The height of the Djoser pyramid is 60 meters. Almost at a depth of 30 meters there was a burial chamber, to which corridors with many branches led. The branch rooms contained utensils and sacrifices. Here archaeologists found three bas-reliefs of Pharaoh Djoser himself. Near the eastern wall of Djoser's pyramid, 11 small burial chambers were discovered, intended for the royal family.

Unlike the famous large pyramids of Giza, Djoser's pyramid had a stepped shape, as if intended for the pharaoh's ascension to heaven. Of course, this pyramid is inferior in popularity and size to the Cheops pyramid, but still the contribution of the very first stone pyramid to the culture of Egypt is difficult to overestimate.

The Pyramid of Cheops. History and Brief Description

But still, the most famous for the ordinary population of our planet are the three nearby pyramids of Egypt - Khafre, Mekerin and the largest and tallest pyramid in Egypt - Cheops (Khufu)

Pyramids of Giza

The pyramid of Pharaoh Cheops was built near the city of Giza, currently a suburb of Cairo. At present, it is impossible to say for sure when the Cheops pyramid was built, and research gives a strong scatter. In Egypt, for example, the date of the start of construction of this pyramid is officially celebrated - August 23, 2480 BC.

Pyramid of Cheops and Sphinx

About 100,000 people were simultaneously involved in the construction of the wonder of the world, the Pyramid of Cheops. During the first ten years of work, a road was built along which huge stone blocks were delivered to the river and the underground structures of the pyramid. Work on the construction of the monument itself continued for about 20 years.

The size of the Cheops Pyramid in Giza is amazing. The height of the Cheops pyramid initially reached 147 meters. Over time, due to sand filling and loss of lining, it decreased to 137 meters. But even this figure allowed it to remain the tallest human structure in the world for a long time. The pyramid has a square base with a side of 147 meters. To build this giant, it is estimated that 2,300,000 limestone blocks were required, weighing an average of 2.5 tons.

How were the pyramids built in Egypt?

The technology of building pyramids is still controversial in our time. Versions vary from the invention of concrete in Ancient Egypt to the construction of pyramids by aliens. But it is still believed that the pyramids were built by man solely by his own strength. So, to extract stone blocks, they first marked out a shape in the rock, hollowed out grooves and inserted dry wood into them. Later, the tree was doused with water, it expanded, a crack formed in the rock, and the block was separated. Then it was processed into the desired shape with tools and sent along the river to the construction site.

To lift the blocks up, the Egyptians used gently sloping embankments, along which these megaliths were dragged on wooden sleds. But even with such a backward technology by our standards, the quality of work is surprising - the blocks fit tightly to each other with minimal mismatches.

We can talk for a long time about the pyramids shrouded in myths and legends, their labyrinths and traps, mummies and treasures, but we’ll leave that to Egyptologists. For us, the Cheops Pyramid is one of the greatest structures of mankind throughout its existence and, of course, the only First Wonder of the World that has survived to this day from the depths of centuries.

Pyramids of Giza

Today, thanks to the work of researchers and archaeologists, it is known that pyramid-shaped structures are located on many continents. All of them are evidence of the high level of development of ancient civilizations.

The most famous are the Egyptian pyramids, rightfully ranked among the seven wonders of the world. For a long time it was believed that they were the most ancient pyramids in the world. These monumental structures were built by the pharaohs for burial. The most famous are the three great pyramids at Giza.

The largest and most ancient of them is the Cheops pyramid. According to historians, its construction took 20 years. The total height of the structure, covered with white limestone slabs and topped with gilded stone, was 147 meters. Currently, the cladding has been destroyed, and the height of the pyramid has decreased to 139 meters.

Josser

More than 2 million stone blocks weighing 2 - 2.5 tons were used for its construction, but some weigh several tens of tons. Interestingly, no binder mortars were used during construction. The stone blocks were very carefully processed and fitted to each other.

It is believed that the construction of this pyramid began in 2470 BC. However, the oldest pyramid is the Pyramid of Josser, built in 2670 BC. It is considered the oldest of the large stone buildings. Its peculiarity is a stepped design and 11 burial chambers intended for the entire family of the pharaoh.

The Mayans built similar step pyramids. In addition to funeral functions, these structures had great ritual significance. Most of them had temples or ritual structures for sacrifices at the top. The first structures of this type were built by the Mayan people about 3 thousand years ago and were mostly simple mounds.

Recently, archaeologists discovered on the territory of the ancient Mayan city of Ceibal, located in the center of Guatemala, an ancient pyramid dating back to approximately 850 - 900 BC. The most famous of the Mayan pyramids are the Kukulkan pyramid, 55 meters high, the highest pyramid of La Danta (79 meters), the pyramid in Cholula, considered the largest in the world, since it exceeds even the Cheops pyramid in volume.

Chinese ancient pyramids are little known, the average height of which is 50 - 100 meters, although the unique Great White Pyramid, 300 meters high, is several times higher than the Egyptian pyramid of Cheops. Mostly clay was used for their construction, but even today, despite the fact that they are covered with earth and vegetation, the clear tetrahedral shape of the pyramids is perfectly preserved.

According to ancient chronicles, the age of hundreds of pyramids located in China dates back to approximately 5000 BC. These unique historical structures have been little studied for the simple reason that the Chinese government banned excavations, citing the fact that they would leave archaeological excavations to the next generation of scientists.

Another mystery was the recently discovered temple complex underwater off the coast of Japan. In addition to other structures, there is a large pyramid more than 40 meters high. It consists of rectangular stone blocks and has a stepped design.

10 - 12 thousand years BC

The most interesting thing is that scientists have established the time when the structure went under water - this is 10 - 12 thousand years BC, but the pyramid could have been built even earlier. This discovery could radically change our knowledge of human development. According to the generally accepted theory, at this time there was a period of the Stone Age, and primitive people did not even know how to grow food, let alone build such complex structures.

Ancient pyramids are silent witnesses of civilizations that existed on Earth several thousand years ago. Their scale and durability raise many questions, the answers to which remain a mystery today.
