Selection of lambs and inspection of sheep. Transportation of farm animals by road. Terms and costs of international transportation of animals.

Moving is a troublesome and hectic business for any person, but what can we say if you need to transport a cow or a bird? A well-known saying states that for us humans, moving is like a fire. It also causes stress in animals:

- they refuse food;
- sometimes they get sick;
- get injured;
- lose weight and productivity.

All these troubles can be avoided if you are well prepared for transporting animals.

Transporting livestock to a new location

What type of transport do you prefer? Of course, automobile. Its advantages, compared to the railway, are obvious:

— reduction of travel time;
— reduction of feed costs;
- lower costs.

To transport livestock, special vehicles are used - livestock carriers or ordinary trucks. Livestock cannot be transported on dump trucks or vehicles with metal bodies.
A livestock truck has the necessary equipment, but the body of a regular truck will have to be equipped with:

- fence the sides with strong boards and shields 1.6 m high (for horses - 2 m);
- cover the floor with wooden flooring;
— remove sharp objects from the body;
- if the body is elongated, then for the transportation of pigs, calves, sheep it is separated by one to three partitions 1 m high in order to avoid injury to animals during sudden braking, as well as on descents and ascents.

In the cold season, a strong wooden shield (wind protection) is installed in front of the body, and in winter and on inclement days the entire body is covered with a tarpaulin. This will save the animals from the piercing wind, and therefore from disease and death.

Remember that wet wool on the skin loses its heat-protective properties, and sheep are especially sensitive to low temperatures.

In cold weather, the floor of the body should be generously covered with bedding (preferably straw). In hot weather, when transporting fat pigs, it is advisable to pour sand moistened with cold water on the floor - this will protect the animals from overheating and heat stroke.

The body must be cleared of manure. It is especially important to follow this rule in winter, when the floor becomes icy, causing animals to slip and get injured.

Do not try to fit as many animals as possible into one car - such “savings” will result in losses. Typically the conditions are:

— for each head of cattle you need 2 m2 of area;
— for young cattle, sows and boars – 1.6 m2 each;
- for young pigs, sheep and calves - 1 m2 each.

This area gives the animals the opportunity to lie down. For breeding cattle, the space is increased by half.

How to arrange animals in the car?

If the road ahead is not long (no more than 2 hours), then horses, adult cattle and heavy young animals are placed in the back:

- either longitudinally - head first;
- either transversely - with the head to the side board;
- or in a mixed way - some of the animals are placed longitudinally, and 1-2 heads - transversely.

During long-term transportation, cattle are placed only lengthwise, firmly tied at the front wall. Lightweight young animals, up to 2 years of age, can be transported without a leash.

Let's not forget about the loading and unloading structure: the most reliable thing is that it is made of brick or an earthen embankment, up to the level of the body. A wooden transition flooring, at least 2 m long and 1 m wide, is positioned so that one part of it lies on the floor of the body, the other on the platform.

Preparing animals for relocation

Animals tolerate transportation better if they are sorted in advance into groups, taking into account sex, age, fatness and live weight. Each such group is kept separately for 2–3 days in a limited area, fed and watered during transportation. Animals get used to each other, worry less, and become less aggressive.

Loading should take place in as calm an environment as possible. It is advisable that the cattleman or the owner participate in it, since the animals are accustomed to him and feel calmer and become more obedient.

To drive the animals, they use clappers - wooden sticks 60 cm long, to the end of which a tape made of tarpaulin, rubber or belting 8 cm wide and 40 cm long is attached.

Feeding animals during stops

If transportation takes you no more than 6 hours, then the animals can do without food and water. For a longer “trip”, take care of rest and food for the animals. Prepare feed based on:

- for cattle and sheep - 5 kg per 1 centner of live weight;
— for pigs – 3.5 kg of compound feed per head;
- for a horse - 12 kg of hay and 2 kg of commercial feed.

Animals must be unloaded before feeding. Keep in mind that in the first 3 hours after stopping, animals refuse water and food: they need to calm down. During a stop, you need to clear the body of manure and update the litter.

A few more rules and facts

It is prohibited to transport pigs in frosts below minus 19°C and temperatures above plus 26°C.

In summer it is better to transport livestock early in the morning.

The speed of vehicles should not exceed: on asphalt roads – 60 km/h; on cobblestones – 45 km/h; on country roads and dirt roads - 30 km/h.

Animals tolerate low temperatures more easily than high temperatures.

After transportation in cramped conditions or uncomfortable accommodation, animals experience severe muscle tremors of the entire body or twitching of individual parts of it.

The forced parking between their loading and departure of transport also has a bad effect on the animals. It happens that a long delay in departure causes severe nervous system disorder and even convulsions in pigs.

Transportation of rabbits, fur animals, poultry

Rabbits are transported in cages (200x40x30 cm), each of which is divided into 8 compartments by partitions. The front wall is made of wooden slats with intervals of 4 cm from two halves each. The halves serve as doors for 4 compartments.

The cages can be installed in 4 tiers, which are firmly fastened together. Place dry and clean bedding on the floor:

- straw and sawdust;
- moss and tree leaves.

Feeding rabbits

During long-term transportation (more than 5 hours), rabbits should be fed and watered three times a day. Daily feed ration for a rabbit with an average live weight of about 2 kg:

- 100 g of hay or juicy grass;
- 200 g of silage or root vegetables;
— 25 g of concentrated feed.

Fur-bearing animals (nutria, mink, sable, arctic fox) are transported in strong wooden boxes or metal cages with an impenetrable bottom, a metal lattice door and a strong lock. As a rule, adult animals are placed separately, and young animals are loaded with 2-3 heads.

Cell size:

— for sables and minks – 66x46x40 cm;
— for foxes and arctic foxes – 52x51x48 cm;
– for nutria – 44x40x35 cm.

The cages are installed in 4 tiers, firmly fastened with slats or wire. During long-term transportation, cages are equipped with feeders and drinking bowls.

Feed ration:

— for carnivorous animals, the specific gravity of meat and fish should be 70-90%;
- for nutria - good quality hay, grain, root crops;
- for one head of fox and arctic fox you need 500 g, sable - 250 g of meat or fish, nutria - 300 g of feed, 100 g of hay, 400 g of root vegetables.

Animals need to be fed three times a day.

It's better to buy a bird close to home

Poultry is transported in cages (90x60x60 cm) or in special containers:

— the bottom and end walls are solid;
— side walls and covers made of planks with a clearance of 5 cm;
— the doors are made from above.

The stocking density of chickens, broiler chickens and ducks is 30, geese and turkeys are 15 heads per 1 m2 of floor. It is better to transport ducks in cages of 10-12, geese and turkeys - 6-7 heads each.

The bird does not tolerate transportation well, especially without water and food, so it is recommended to transport it over a distance of no more than 100 km.

During long-term transportation, the bird should be fed and watered every 2 hours, constantly monitor its condition, and prevent mortality. After 6 hours of being in cages on the way, the loss of live weight is about 6%, after 18 hours - up to 12%.

What documents are needed to transport animals?

Transportation of livestock and poultry is carried out only with the permission and under the control of the veterinary service in the presence of a veterinary certificate (Form 1), which is issued only if there are no infectious diseases in the area.

For transportation within one region, a certificate signed and certified by the chief veterinarian is required.

These documents are valid for three days, until the animals are sent, and only until the specified point.

More articles on farming:

Hi all!

I remember I promised to show the video. I'm showing you. This is a short fragment about the examination of queens and lambs. Lambs are inspected before being sent to Moscow, and ewes are inspected along the way. Now I will try, albeit briefly, but in detail to talk about this process:

First: All animals must be examined periodically. This applies not only to sheep, lambs and rams, but to everyone. Both cattle and poultry. Even cats need to be examined. And since I am engaged in sheep breeding, the flock needs to be inspected two or even three times more often than required. I think that everything here is logical and understandable; there is no need to focus on this point.

Second: Before sending all or part of the livestock, regardless of the place of departure of the animals (interregional transportation or intra-district), the farmer is required to obtain permission from the regional Animal Disease Control Service under the State Veterinary Service. This is a Veterinary Certificate of Form No. 1 or Form No. 4 (depending on the destination and purpose of transportation). This is Vet. The certificate is a document of strict state reporting. It contains all the information, there is an appendix to it, which shows the specifics of the livestock being transported - the number, gender and age composition, tag numbers, tattoos or brands of each animal. Without such Vet. Evidence won't get you very far.

Third: to receive Vet. Certificates are required to quarantine the livestock planned for shipment. Quarantine is the isolation of animals from the main flock, blood sampling by a veterinarian a month before shipment (in the case of interregional shipment), tests and general examination. If everything is in order, you are ready to go! The video was filmed during the “quarantine” period. Up to 200 heads can be placed there. When it is free, we place sheep with very small lambs there, giving them separate “rest zones.” All the rest of the livestock, except for the animals prepared for shipment and lambing ewes, walk on pasture with the shepherd. By the way, remember, I . Tell me, is this kind of information interesting and informative?

Fourth: examination, blood sampling, branding of lambs and rams by a veterinarian - this is not a cheap procedure. Transportation and support to Moscow - too. Therefore, everything needs to be calculated and prepared. You need to understand exactly how many sheep will go to slaughter in the Moscow region. You need to understand how many of the total number of heads sent will be lambs and how many will be rams. It is necessary to analyze and forecast sales. We need to insure risks. Therefore, sending more or less goals than the required number is an unaffordable luxury. And also you cannot send “substandard” animals - thin animals. They will already lose weight on the road and during their first stay at the slaughterhouse, so you need to send at least well-fed animals to Moscow. This requires an inspection.

Fifth: So, what are we actually looking at? I check the condition of the lambs. To do this, I look at the ribs and loin in the saddle area. These are places that are “indicative” and tactilely accessible for assessing body condition. I rate fatness on a 5-point scale. The lambs examined in this video almost all received a 4 or 5 rating. I also examine animals for diseases. There were 3 lambs with sore joints (there is one in the video - which was lying), they were limping, and their general condition was unsatisfactory, so the fatness, unfortunately, was “one”. Of course, they did not go to Moscow and stayed on the farm for treatment. Just problems with the joints due to bruises or lack of calcium, but you cannot take such lambs to the slaughterhouse - it will be difficult for them to endure the road and they are unsuitable for meat sales. Even during the examination, I visually determine their weight. The experience came quickly, and now I’m mistaken by a maximum of 1 kilogram. Understanding the total meat yield of the shipped batch gives me the opportunity to predict the amount of profit from sales. This is important - money, as you know, loves counting. And in the context of agricultural activity, they not only love money, but literally require counting and recounting. There are a lot of nuances and subtleties, which I will try to talk about over time on the pages of my magazine.

Some more information

Transportation of farm animals by road Most often they are used over a distance of no more than 500 km, but it is more profitable to transport animals by road over a distance not exceeding 150-200 km. For transportation, special vehicles are used, the interiors of which have roofs, high sides, and are equipped with ladders for loading and unloading animals. In specialized vehicles (livestock carriers) you can transport up to 16 heads of cattle, or up to 50 heads of calves, or up to 55 heads of pigs, or up to 90 heads of sheep and goats.

In the absence of specialized vehicles, animals are transported by ordinary freight transport. To do this, the sides are increased to 11-1.2 meters. The floor of the body should be smooth, without cracks and well covered with bedding. When transporting in windy, rainy and very hot weather, the body of the vehicle is covered with a tarpaulin. Large animals are placed on a short leash, head first. Young cattle, goats, sheep and pigs are transported without a leash. When transporting by road for more than 12 hours, animals are given 3-4 - an hour's rest, during which they receive water and food (in that order!).

Transported animals are always accompanied by a guide - one for 1-4 vehicles. The conductor's responsibilities include the correct placement of animals (timely watering and feeding, cleaning the bodies of manure, replacing bedding, monitoring the health of the animals and handing them over at their destination. The conductor is in the cabin of the last vehicle, if there are several of them in the column, or in the first car, if there are two of them.
