What causes uterine tone during pregnancy. Increased uterine tone in early pregnancy

During pregnancy, women often hear the diagnosis “the uterus is toned.” A phrase that is common in auditory perception can become threatening and lead to irreversible consequences. You should carefully consider the medical verdict and ask the gynecologist an important question: what does this phenomenon mean and whether it is necessary to fight it.

What is uterine tone during pregnancy?

The uterus is a hollow muscle, contracting is its natural state. The organ consists of layers:

  • external – perimetry;
  • middle (muscular) – myometrium;
  • internal - endometrium.

When sneezing, coughing, during a medical gynecological examination or ultrasound, the uterus contracts and becomes toned for a short time. Prolonged contraction of the muscle layer is called “hypertonicity”. This is a dangerous condition for pregnancy. It is necessary to recognize the symptoms in time and eliminate the causes.

Symptoms

The growing fetus stretches the tissues, during this period the muscles relax. The tone of the uterus can be determined by a number of symptoms and during an instrumental examination by a doctor. At each stage of gestation, contractions occur with varying degrees of intensity and have their own characteristics and consequences. Contractions can be local (tone along the posterior wall of the uterus) or general. A woman can understand that the uterus is in good shape by internal sensations and some external signs.

In the early stages

At this stage, cases of tone are observed frequently. Main features:

  1. Aching pain in the lower abdomen.
  2. Pulling sensations.
  3. Cramps similar to contractions, or like menstruation.
  4. Discomfort, pain in the lumbar region.

Sometimes increased tone does not manifest itself, so doctors recommend an ultrasound scan. This procedure accurately determines the condition of the muscles.

Signs of uterine tone in the second trimester

At this stage (from 8 to 16 weeks), cases of hypertonicity are detected much less frequently. They are no less dangerous than in the first and third trimester of fetal formation. You should immediately contact a gynecologist if you feel the following:

  1. Pain in the lower abdomen.
  2. Tactile sensations of “fossilization” of the entire abdomen.
  3. Bloody discharge.

The diagnosis is confirmed by a medical examination. If the uterus is toned during pregnancy in the second trimester, this threatens abnormal development of the fetus or premature birth.

In the 3rd trimester

The most responsible and difficult stage. The body prepares for childbirth, muscle contractions become more frequent. It is difficult to independently determine whether it is a manifestation of habitual spasms or tone. Only a doctor can diagnose a deviation from the norm. If, during examination at the 32nd week, the uterus is dilated and the ECG of the baby inside the womb is unstable, the specialist will immediately understand the presence of increased tone. To prevent the risk of miscarriage, you need to visit your gynecologist more often. In all cases, if there is bloody discharge, you should urgently call a doctor.

Causes

The following reasons can cause a state of increased tone:

  • fatigue/slight malaise;
  • stress/depression;
  • physical pathologies (underdevelopment of the reproductive organ);
  • lack of the hormone progesterone;
  • Rh conflict between mother and child support systems;
  • severe toxicosis with vomiting;
  • infectious diseases;
  • age-related characteristics of a woman’s body;
  • chronic or acquired diseases;
  • general psychological mood;
  • the physical condition of the woman;
  • loads;
  • in special cases - sex with uterine tone.

When the uterus is toned, what does this mean for a woman looking forward to having a baby? An experienced specialist can describe the clinical consequences and dangers for the mother and baby. Improper lifestyle and behavior of a pregnant woman can leave an indelible mark.

Why is increased uterine tone dangerous?

Increased tone negatively affects the child and mother. During the period of bearing a child, hypertonicity means the risk of termination of pregnancy: in the early stages by miscarriage, in the later stages by premature birth. In the second trimester, prolonged muscle contraction leads to deterioration of blood circulation to the placenta; insufficient oxygen reaches the fetus, which causes hypoxia. Placental abruption occurs as a result of the fact that it does not contract along with the myometrial layer.

Treat with medication when the uterus is hypertonic, what does this mean? The condition requires a mandatory visit to a doctor, who will correctly diagnose and prescribe the necessary medications. In the initial stages, these can be antispasmodics: “No-shpa”, “Papaverine”, motherwort, valerian. For prevention, pregnant women are prescribed vitamins A and E, light breathing exercises, and more walks in the fresh air.

How to relieve uterine tone at home

You can remove the tone of the uterus by resorting to simple methods.

The uterus is toned - this diagnosis is made by approximately 30% of pregnant women; the development of pathology can be triggered by stress, overwork, bad habits, and hormonal imbalance. Special exercises, antispasmodics, progesterone-based drugs will help eliminate discomfort, and following simple rules of prevention significantly reduces the risk of developing a dangerous condition.

Even a minor stressful situation can cause uterine tone

The uterus is toned - what does this mean?

During the natural course of pregnancy, without deviations, the muscles of the uterus are in a calm, relaxed state - this is normotonus.

Hypertonicity is a pathological tension in the muscles of the reproductive organ, which can cause miscarriage or premature birth. A short-term increase in tone occurs when laughing, changing body position, sneezing, or excitement. With the total form, the muscles of the walls and fundus of the uterus contract, with local hypertonicity - only the anterior or posterior wall; any of the pathologies can have I, II degrees of severity.

Normal uterine tone during pregnancy is 8–12 mmHg. Art.

Symptoms of uterine tone

Signs of hypertonicity are pronounced, which allows a woman to independently feel the development of the pathological process; unpleasant sensations can occur in the early and late stages of pregnancy.

How does hypertension manifest itself at different times:

In the 1st trimester, a woman may experience pain in the lower abdomen; such symptoms should not be overlooked

  • in 1st trimester– nagging pain in the lower abdomen, radiating to the lower back, bloody spotting, muscle spasms;
  • in the 2nd trimester– spotting, severe constant back pain;
  • in the 3rd trimester– during this period, training contractions often occur; they can be distinguished from hypertonicity by increased pain in the back and lower abdomen.

A sign of uterine tone is the occurrence of severe pain when the baby moves; the hard walls of the uterus put pressure on the fetus. The presence of pathology is also indicated by the absence of movements in the abdomen in a pregnant woman for more than 12 hours.

With grade II hypertonicity, the pain in the lower abdomen and lower back becomes constant, intensifies when walking, and radiates to the perineum and rectum. If such symptoms appear, hospitalization is required. You can see what the stomach looks like with increased tone in the photo.

Reasons for a toned uterus

Hormonal disorders, some anatomical features of the structure of organs, and non-compliance with doctor’s recommendations can provoke an increase in the tone of the uterus.

Why does hypertension occur?

  • – this hormone helps relax the smooth muscles of the uterus; if it is lacking, the tone of the uterus increases;
  • high content of the male hormone testosterone;
  • bicornuate uterus or its bend - pregnancy proceeds without any special complications, but it is often not possible to carry a child to term due to severe tension in the muscles of the organ;
  • early toxicosis - against the background of severe and prolonged vomiting, spasm of the uterine muscles occurs;
  • Rhesus conflict;
  • the presence of scars, adhesions in the uterus after surgery, abortion, severely stretched muscles after a previous birth;
  • frequent constipation, bloating;
  • heavy lifting, severe stress, active sexual intercourse;
  • disruption of the thyroid gland, infectious diseases of the genital organs;
  • smoking, drinking alcohol, weakened immunity.

One of the reasons for the appearance of uterine hypertonicity is early toxicosis

Retrochorial hematoma provokes an increase in uterine tone, occurs against the background of hypertension, hormonal disorders, STDs, stress, and is accompanied by dark red or bloody discharge.

The risk of developing hypertension increases with polyhydramnios and multiple pregnancies, if the woman’s age is less than 18 or more than 30 years.

How to determine the tone of the uterus during pregnancy?

Diagnosis of increased tone includes palpation, examination; if a pathology is suspected, the doctor prescribes an ultrasound - the study helps to determine the abnormal shape of the uterus, recognize which muscles are tense, and identify the degree of contractions.

When the tone of the muscles of the posterior wall increases, the woman does not feel much discomfort; the pathology can only be detected during a routine ultrasound, and tonuometry is prescribed to confirm the diagnosis.

To independently understand whether the uterus is toned or not, you need to lie on your back, breathe calmly for a few minutes, relax, with your lungs. Feel the abdomen with gentle movements. Normally, the abdomen is soft, but with hypertonicity it is elastic, and muscle tension is felt.

After childbirth, women often experience decreased tone against the background of very relaxed uterine muscles - pathology indicates the presence of hypotonic uterine bleeding.

What to do at home?

If the uterus becomes toned, complete physical rest is necessary, stress should be avoided, and sexual intercourse is prohibited. The diet should contain more fiber products that normalize intestinal function; coffee, strong tea, and chocolate are contraindicated.

If there is a suspicion of uterine tone, then it is necessary to ensure complete rest

At the initial stage, No-shpa, Papaverine will help eliminate spasms, and tincture of motherwort or valerian will help normalize the psycho-emotional state. If unpleasant symptoms appear, you need to drink tea with chamomile or lemon balm, raise your legs above your head, and stroke your stomach with gentle circular movements.

Treatment with drugs

In the treatment of hypertension, hormonal drugs based on progesterone or estrogen are used, depending on the cause that triggered the development of the pathology. To reduce the manifestations of toxicosis, antiemetics are prescribed; calcium antagonists will help reduce muscle tension.

How to relieve uterine tone:

A modern drug that will relieve symptoms

  1. – a hormonal synthetic drug of the latest generation, contains a progesterone analogue, has virtually no contraindications or side effects. The dosage for a threatened miscarriage is 40 mg of the drug once, then 10 mg of the drug once every 8 hours.
  2. Utrozhestan is a gestagenic drug based on micronized progesterone, produced in the form of capsules with a dosage of 100 and 200 mg, they can be used orally or intravaginally. The medicine is most often prescribed in the first trimester, the daily dose is 200–400 mg, divided into 2 doses.
  3. Partusisten is a beta-blocker, relaxes the muscular layer of the uterus, improves metabolism in cells, and normalizes blood flow between the fetus and the placenta. Dosage regimen: 5 mg once every 4 hours, but not more than 40 mg per day. The medicine is prescribed in the II, III trimester.
  4. Corinfar is a calcium channel blocker, reduces the contraction of smooth muscles, improves blood circulation and tissue nutrition. The drug acts quickly, but is rarely prescribed, and only from the second trimester, when other medications do not help. Take 1 tablet per day after meals with plenty of water; withdrawal of the medication occurs gradually over 3–5 days.
  5. Hexoprenaline - a medicine that reduces the tone and contractile activity of the myometrium and uterus, and eliminates spontaneous contractions. Take 1-2 tablets three times a day until the unpleasant symptoms are completely eliminated. The medicine cannot be taken in the first trimester.

Additionally, medications are prescribed that contain magnesium and B vitamins.

Exercises

If hypertonicity is in the initial stages of development, simple exercises will help relax the muscles of the uterus; they can be done at any stage of pregnancy.

Gymnastics to reduce uterine tone:

One of the exercises to normalize the condition is diaphragmatic breathing.

  1. In a lying or sitting position, relax the muscles of the neck and face as much as possible; the tone of the uterus automatically decreases.
  2. Get on all fours, lean on your elbows or palms, bend your back up, lower your head, hold in the position for a count of 5. Bend your back down, raise your head, count to 5. Do 5-7 repetitions, then just lie down.
  3. Diaphragmatic breathing is the best way to relax all muscles. Lie on your back, bend your knees, close your eyes. Place your right palm on your stomach, your left palm on your chest. As you inhale, round your stomach, keep your chest motionless, take a slow breath, and gradually draw in your stomach.

Aromatherapy helps well with the tone of the uterus - add jasmine, lotus, rose, vanilla, chamomile, mint oil to a warm bath or aroma lamp.

Why is uterine tone dangerous during pregnancy?

Prolonged hypertonicity of the uterus negatively affects the development of the fetus and can cause intrauterine death of the child. If the pathology occurs at 12–16 weeks, the embryo cannot gain a foothold in the endometrium, the fertilized egg exfoliates, is rejected, and a miscarriage occurs.

What threatens increased uterine tone:

  • disruption of the feeding process and blood supply to the fetus;
  • oxygen starvation, hypoxia, arrest of fetal growth and development, malnutrition;
  • placental abruption;
  • premature birth.

The worst consequence of uterine tone is premature birth.

If the tone increases shortly before childbirth, this is normal, the process of fetal formation is completed, and training contractions begin.

Hypertonicity is one of the main causes of missed abortion. In the early stages, this manifests itself in the form of a decrease in basal temperature, toxicosis disappears sharply, in the 2nd and 3rd trimester - chills appear, temperature readings increase, and the mammary glands decrease.

Prevention

To reduce the risk of developing uterine tone during pregnancy, you must regularly undergo all examinations and follow your doctor’s recommendations.

Compliance with hygiene rules, proper sleep, long walks in the fresh air, moderate physical activity, emotional peace - all this has a beneficial effect on the condition of a pregnant woman and helps to avoid the development of hypertension.

To prevent uterine tone, you should spend more time outdoors and do light exercise.

Hard physical labor, frequent and overly active sexual intercourse, addictions, and poor nutrition increase the risk of increased muscle tone of the uterus.

Starting from the first weeks of pregnancy, a woman’s entire body undergoes restructuring and preparation of optimal conditions for the development of a new life. And the uterus is no exception. Natural stretching and increase in size are often accompanied by specific sensations of varying degrees of severity. It is important to distinguish physiological changes and their manifestations from other pathological conditions that require medical supervision. We will talk about such a phenomenon as “the uterus is in good shape.”

The tone of the uterus is involuntary contractions of its muscle layer (myometrium). Most often, this manifestation is a consequence of certain processes in the body rather than an independent phenomenon. If such spasms occur, it is important to control their duration and intensity. So, how does uterine tone manifest and what methods exist for diagnosing this condition?

Signs of uterine tone

Depending on the degree of uterine tone, symptoms may be more or less pronounced. Manifestations of hypertension that require consultation with a doctor are:

  • Pain in the lower abdomen. The nature of the sensations can be either pulling, similar to menstrual, or cramping (at a later date).
  • Painful sensations in the sacrum, back, aches in them.
  • Bloody discharge from the genital tract.
  • Any discharge other than typical daily discharge.

In case of such complaints, along with palpation, which the doctor will carry out in a horizontal position of the pregnant woman, ultrasound monitoring is recommended. It can be performed either using a vaginal sensor or transabdomially. Based on the results of the study, the doctor judges the localization of the tone - along the anterior or posterior wall of the myometrium, its intensity - degree 1 or 2.

A woman can determine the presence of uterine tone on her own. To do this, she should lie on her back, relax, and place her hand on her stomach. Gently palpating it, the expectant mother should monitor the sensations. If during the examination the abdomen is soft, this indicates that there are no obvious reasons for concern. A hard, dense belly, “like a stone,” is an alarming signal that requires special attention. In this case, it is worth assuming that the tone of the uterus is increased. This condition can pose a serious threat to pregnancy, including its termination.

Causes of uterine tone

An increase in uterine tone is caused by reasons that are not always directly related to it. Among the most common, we highlight general factors that have an impact regardless of the duration of pregnancy, and those that can manifest themselves to the maximum only in a certain trimester.

General factors

  1. Overwork, stress.

These factors have a negative impact on the susceptible body of a pregnant woman, exposing it to additional stress.

  1. Physical exercise.

Active sports during a “special situation” can lead to unwanted muscle strain and, as a result, hypertonicity.

  1. Inflammatory diseases of the reproductive system.

Previous interventions, chronic diseases of the uterus or its appendages create a risk of increased tone with increased load on the organ (uterus).

  1. Infectious and somatic diseases - acute respiratory infections, influenza, diseases of the heart, liver, kidneys or other organs, abnormalities in the functioning of the central nervous system.

Deviations in the functioning of body systems can cause disruption of the regulation of muscle contractions of the uterus.

  1. Rhesus conflict.

The negative Rh factor of a pregnant woman can cause a conflict with the positive Rh factor of the future dad. Then the mother’s body perceives the fetus as a foreign body that needs to be gotten rid of. The result is increased contraction of the uterine muscles and hypertonicity.

  1. Anatomy.

Individual structural features and the shape of the uterus (bicornuate or saddle-shaped) can serve as a predisposing factor to its excessive compression and spasms, causing difficulties with pregnancy.

Features of the trimester

  • The most common “provocateurs” of uterine tone in the early stages of pregnancy are hormonal disorders and severe toxicosis.

A lack of progesterone in the body, a hormone directly responsible for normal tone in the uterus, is a serious warning sign, indifference to which can lead to miscarriage.

Severe toxicosis is often accompanied by profuse and frequent vomiting. In this case, intense compression occurs of almost all abdominal muscles, including the muscles of the uterus.

  • In the second and third trimesters, the causes of tone are physiological in nature.

Multiple pregnancies, large fetuses, and polyhydramnios cause excessive stretching of the uterus and increase tension in it.

Treatment of uterine tone

If the doctor has diagnosed uterine tone, treatment of this unpleasant phenomenon will be aimed at relaxing its muscle layer and eliminating spasms. Specialized therapy is prescribed exclusively by a doctor, based on an analysis of the reasons that caused this condition. Drug treatment will not have the desired effect without compliance with bed rest - the first and main requirement. The most widely used “relaxing” drugs are:

  • No-spa (injection or in tablet form), Papaverine and Magnesia.
  • 3rd trimester – support with vitamins (for example, Magne B-6). It is not recommended to completely eliminate contractions, because the body is gradually preparing for labor.

In addition, medications are prescribed to eliminate the actual cause of the tone. If there is a lack of progesterone, appropriate replacement therapy will compensate for its deficiency. In case of Rh conflict or excess of male hormones, adequate treatment is also selected.

How to relieve uterine tone at home

Simple manipulations aimed at relieving uterine tone and pain caused by it can be performed by the pregnant woman herself, without leaving home.

Exercise "Cat"

Get on all fours, raise your head and arch your back. The bend must be done while inhaling. Stay in this position for 3-5 seconds. Return to the starting position. Repeat this several times and then rest for an hour. An important rule: perform the exercise smoothly, without sudden movements, maintaining calm breathing.

Relaxation of facial muscles

Sit in a comfortable position and lower your head, trying to relax all the muscles of your face and neck as much as possible. Breathing is even, through the mouth. Try not to think about anything at this moment. The exercise lasts several minutes. This technique will not only relieve tension, but also teach you to feel and control your body.

Aromatherapy

A warm shower with aromatic oils, a drop of oil in a medallion will calm you down, restore your spirits and positive attitude. However, you should be careful both with the choice of oil (some, on the contrary, can enhance tone), and with its quantity.

Prevention of uterine tone

It is much better to prevent any disease or pathological condition than to eliminate it. A few simple recommendations will help; if you cannot avoid tone, you will significantly reduce the risk of its occurrence.

  1. Daily walks in the fresh air are a dose of oxygen and excellent exercise in one bottle.
  2. Regular gymnastics. Strong physical exercise will normalize muscle tone, give you vigor and a positive attitude.
  3. Proper nutrition. Try to exclude from your diet not only all “harmful” foods, but also foods that cause increased gas formation. It is recommended to limit the consumption of a number of spices, such as garlic, parsley, celery. Salty and smoked foods lead to increased water consumption and retain it in the body, which increases the risk of edema and polyhydramnios. This can cause tone.
  4. Taking vitamins. Your doctor will advise you on the medications you need.
  5. If discomfort occurs, limit or completely abstain from sexual activity for a while.
  6. Avoid wearing tight clothing, which will put pressure on the stomach and impair blood circulation.
  7. The most important thing is more positive emotions. Smile, enjoy your wonderful condition.

Taking good care of your health and following the doctor’s recommendations will help you carry and give birth to a healthy baby. It is important to remember that increased uterine tone during pregnancy is not a death sentence, but a feature of its course that requires closer attention.

Reading time: 11 minutes

Almost every pregnant woman has encountered this problem at least once. Uterine tone during pregnancy is not a disease, but only a symptom that can occur in any trimester and indicates a threat of miscarriage, and therefore requires special treatment. To avoid serious complications, you need to know about the signs of this condition and methods of prevention and treatment.

What is uterine tone during pregnancy?

This term refers to tension in the muscles of the uterus. Normal tone is necessary to maintain a certain position/pressure in the organ cavity, and hypertonicity is considered pathological - excessive muscle tension and contraction. A short-term increase in the indicator occurs when sneezing, laughing, during orgasm, does not cause discomfort to the woman and does not threaten the health of the child.

Sustained muscle tension can lead to early miscarriage or premature birth in the 2nd-3rd trimester of pregnancy. At best, the pathological condition will negatively affect the development of the fetus, since the muscles of the uterus are too tense and compress the blood vessels, resulting in a deterioration in the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to the child. This threatens hypoxia and delayed development of the baby, so women with high uterine tone need close attention and observation from doctors.

Symptoms

Hypertonicity of the uterus during pregnancy manifests itself differently at different stages. In the first trimester, the characteristic symptoms of the pathology are:

  • nagging pain in the lower abdomen;
  • pain syndrome radiating to the lower back and crosses.

Signs of uterine tone during pregnancy in the second and third trimesters:

  • the stomach becomes dense, hard;
  • bloody discharge appears;
  • Braxton Hicks contractions may occur.

The purpose of the latter is to prepare the uterus for the upcoming birth. Training contractions appear in the last stages of pregnancy and are characterized by painlessness (relative pain) and short duration. In the last weeks of pregnancy, it becomes more difficult to determine hypertonicity: the baby kicks hard, and the uterine walls contract in response to this. In this case, you should pay attention to the degree of pain and regularity of such contractions. As a rule, uterine contractions with hypertonicity are accompanied by pain comparable to:

  • with cramps on the first day of menstruation;
  • lower back pain;
  • intestinal colic.

Causes

The factors that provoke increased tone during pregnancy are varied. They often appear as a consequence of other problems that accompany pregnancy. The main causes of the pathological condition are:

  1. Lack of progesterone. The most common cause of hypertension in the early stages. The main function of the hormone is to prepare the walls of the uterus for the implantation of the fertilized egg. With insufficient progesterone production, increased tone of the muscle layer of the organ develops.
  2. Toxicosis. Hypertonicity can occur as a result of severe vomiting, since contractions of the peritoneum during this act also affect the uterus.
  3. Malformations of the uterus. Irregular shape or abnormal arrangement of the muscle fibers of the organ can cause hypertonicity in the first trimester.
  4. Rhesus conflict. If the mother and child have different Rh factors, then the pregnant woman’s body perceives the baby as a foreign object, and the immune system will begin to produce antibodies aimed at eliminating it. It is noteworthy that the first pregnancy with Rh-conflict is usually easy, since antibodies are produced in small quantities to trigger rejection.
  5. Stretching of the uterus. Pathology may appear against the background of polyhydramnios or multiple pregnancies. Under such conditions, the protective mechanism of the uterus is triggered, as a result of which its muscles contract strongly. The problem often occurs in the 2nd and 3rd trimester of pregnancy.
  6. The presence of inflammatory processes and infections. The body produces bioactive substances that stimulate contraction of muscle fibers, which leads to hypertonicity.
  7. Malposition. At the end of pregnancy, the transverse position of the baby can lead to increased uterine tone and, as a result, premature birth.
  8. Previous abortions, miscarriages. These factors affect the contractility of the organ.
  9. Social aspects. Heavy physical activity, harmful working conditions, frequent stress, poor nutrition, lack of sleep are unfavorable factors that can adversely affect a woman’s central nervous system, which disrupts uterine contractions and increases tone.

In the early stages

During the first trimester, a woman's body undergoes significant changes, so the internal reaction to such stress can be unpredictable. At the beginning of the period, hypertonicity may be temporary, but it is considered normal. Common causes of the symptom:

  1. The woman got nervous. In this case, the uterus begins to contract during the experience. Stress factors can be the upcoming changes in life associated with upcoming motherhood. To normalize tone, the expectant mother should calm down and relax.
  2. Overwork. The body spends a significant amount of resources on restructuring, so the expectant mother needs to rest a lot and relieve herself of some household chores.
  3. Recent sexual intercourse. During orgasm, the uterine walls become toned. If a woman does not have health problems, then intimacy with her husband will only benefit her and the baby, otherwise she should refuse sex during pregnancy.

In approximately 60% of pregnant women, hypertonicity in the first 3 months of pregnancy is a dangerous condition that signals the presence of abnormalities. The symptom may indicate:

  1. Threat of spontaneous abortion. In this case, along with uterine contractions, women experience bloody or brown discharge. To avoid this, you need to go to the hospital for treatment.
  2. Frozen pregnancy. Sometimes the development of the fetus stops, and the woman does not notice for some time that there is no longer life in her. An indirect sign of this is hypertonicity against the background of the disappearance of other symptoms inherent in pregnancy.

In the later stages

In the second trimester, an increase in the size of the child is added to the causes of hypertension listed above. From 3 to 7 months of gestation, increased uterine tone is often accompanied by isthmic-cervical insufficiency (the inability of the cervix to keep the organ cavity closed), which together leads to spontaneous abortion, therefore, when symptoms of hypertonicity appear, it is important to immediately undergo an examination by a gynecologist. In the third trimester, uterine activity periodically increases as the body prepares for childbirth.

Braxton-Hicks training contractions differ from real contractions in the following ways:

  • they are irregular;
  • short-lived;
  • do not bring unbearable pain;
  • they stop if you take a shower, change your position, or take an antispasmodic.

What foods cause tone?

Food has a slight effect on the tone of the uterus during pregnancy, and its increase occurs due to the abuse of certain foods. These products include:

  • legumes;
  • apples, pears;
  • mushrooms;
  • turnip;
  • cabbage;
  • radish;
  • Chinese salad;
  • bread;
  • porridge;
  • peaches;
  • carbonated drinks.

Separately, it is worth listing products that will reduce the tone of the uterus - these are:

  • hazelnut;
  • almond;
  • green vegetables.

Why is uterine tone dangerous during pregnancy?

A diagnosis of hypertonicity can lead to dangerous consequences if its initial symptoms are ignored. In this case, pregnancy may end in spontaneous miscarriage or fetal death in the early stages. In the last weeks of pregnancy, premature birth may occur. In addition, increased uterine tone can lead to the development of fetoplacental insufficiency, as a result of which the baby’s nutrition and oxygen supply will deteriorate. The result of this condition will be delayed development of the child or intrauterine hypoxia.

Diagnostics

The examination of a woman is preceded by a survey, after which the gynecologist conducts an examination. These two measures are enough to make a diagnosis, however, even if the doctor is completely confident, the pregnant woman is given an ultrasound to confirm. With the help of this study, you can much more accurately determine the condition of the organ, exclude other diseases with similar symptoms (for example, uterine fibroids) and find out on which specific wall the tone is expressed. The strength of uterine contractions is measured with a special device with sensors (procedure - tonusometry).

How to determine the tone of the uterus during pregnancy yourself

You can diagnose a pathological condition that can provoke a miscarriage yourself at home. It is important to distinguish between the symptoms that are observed with hypertonicity. To determine the tone of the uterus, you need to:

  • lie on your back and relax;
  • gently palpate the abdomen with your fingers, checking the condition of the muscles;
  • if the tissues are soft, then there is no reason to worry;
  • An elastic, hard belly indicates increased muscle contraction, so it is important to consult a doctor immediately.

What to do

Doctors prescribe treatment for the problem based on the strength of the tone and the reason that caused it. In some cases, to maintain pregnancy, therapy is carried out on an outpatient basis. Women with this pathological condition are advised to remain in bed and drink antispasmodics such as No-shpa or Papaverine. How to get rid of uterine tone during pregnancy? Normalization of uterine contractions is promoted by:

  • stress relief;
  • exclusion of physical activity;
  • cessation of sexual activity;
  • acupuncture;
  • aromatherapy.

In addition, it will be possible to normalize the condition of a pregnant woman if:

  • remove from the diet foods that promote uterine tone;
  • spend more time in the fresh air;
  • lie down a lot, do less housework;
  • reduce the likelihood of stress;
  • take warm baths, showers;
  • attend psychotherapy sessions.

With prolonged hypertonicity during pregnancy, doctors, as a rule, insist on hospitalization and treatment of the patient in an inpatient setting. Thus, the patient will not be able to break bed rest, as women do while at home. In addition, in the hospital, doctors will closely monitor the baby’s condition and will be able to promptly relieve muscle contractions if there is a risk of premature labor.

Drug treatment

Regardless of the causes of the pathology, a toned uterus during pregnancy is subject to treatment. Otherwise, contractions may begin, resulting in a miscarriage or premature labor. With timely, adequate therapy, you can easily achieve relief from tone, for which doctors prescribe drugs of different groups.

If the cause of the pathological condition is progesterone deficiency, the woman is prescribed hormonal drugs containing it. If there is an excess of male sex hormones in the blood, their antipodes are prescribed. If a pregnant woman has severe toxicosis, which stimulated uterine contractions, doctors take measures to alleviate her condition. Often, for uterine tone, sodalite medications, for example, motherwort, are prescribed.

Pills

In case of hypertonicity, mandatory treatment with sedatives is carried out, in addition, antispasmodics and, in some cases, progesterone preparations or other hormonal tablets that help reduce the intensity of uterine contractions are prescribed. Common medications for high uterine tone include:

  1. Nozepam. An anxiolytic drug (tranquilizer) belongs to the group of benzodiazepine derivatives. The drug has a sedative effect, has a central muscle relaxant and anticonvulsant effect. The disadvantage of tablets is that they are absorbed very slowly, so the therapeutic effect occurs only after 1-2 days of taking the medicine. The advantage of Nozepam is its effectiveness and low cost.
  2. Duphaston. The drug is an almost complete analogue of the natural hormone progesterone. Duphaston has a positive effect on the contractility of the uterus and many other physiological processes occurring in the body of the expectant mother. The main disadvantage of tablets is their high cost if long-term treatment is required. The advantages of Duphaston are its wide spectrum of action, effectiveness and extremely rare occurrence of side effects.
  3. Partusisten. An effective remedy is used when there is a threat of premature birth or miscarriage; the tablets do not have a negative effect on the fetus. Partusisten relaxes the uterine muscles and belongs to the group of beta2-adrenergic stimulants. The disadvantage of the product is the possibility of some side effects, for example, increased sweating, weakness, hyperglycemia, spasms and muscle pain. The advantage of the medicine is its effectiveness in maintaining pregnancy.

Candles

Preparations in the form of rectal suppositories help to quickly relieve uterine tone. The suppositories are inserted into the rectum and left until completely dissolved. After the active substance enters the blood, the excitation of the uterine walls liquefies. Doctors often prescribe the following medications:

  1. Papaverine. Suppositories are antispasmodic drugs and have a relaxing effect on smooth muscles. Papaverine can be used at any stage of pregnancy, which is its big advantage. Another advantage of the product is the absence of side effects (with the exception of isolated cases). The downside of Papaverine is its contraindications, including low blood pressure, glaucoma, and kidney problems.
  2. Indomethacin. Anti-inflammatory suppositories help relieve hypertension and are usually prescribed together with other medications. The drug has a relatively low cost, which is its big advantage. The disadvantage is the possibility of an allergic reaction.
  3. Viburcol. An antispasmodic, pain-relieving homeopathic drug that is often prescribed to reduce the tone of the uterus during pregnancy. Candles have an antipyretic and calming effect. A significant advantage of the drug is that, thanks to its composition, it does not put a strain on the kidneys and liver. The downside of the drug is its moderate effectiveness compared to other drugs.

Exercises

A woman can provide herself with emergency help if there are signs of hypertonicity with the help of special exercises. Effective techniques:

  1. Knee-elbow pose. You need to kneel down, lean on your elbows, placing soft material under them. After a few minutes of being in this position, the discomfort goes away.
  2. Cat pose. While on her knees, the pregnant woman needs to alternately arch and bend her back. Changing positions should take place while inhaling slowly, and you should stand in each position for 5 seconds.

Forecast

In most cases of hypertension, the prognosis is favorable. The chance of a successful outcome greatly increases with timely diagnosis and proper treatment in compliance with all doctor’s recommendations. If help was provided on time, it is possible to suppress the increased excitability of the uterine walls and extend the period of gestation until the date of birth. As the pathology progresses, the chance of having a viable child appears only at 25-28 weeks.

How to avoid

Prevention of hypertension helps prevent the appearance of unpleasant symptoms and the threat of premature birth. To do this, a woman must:

  • Healthy food;
  • avoid stressful situations;
  • to sleep a lot;
  • stop smoking and drinking alcohol;
  • maintain a daily routine;
  • regularly visit the gynecological office;
  • avoid physical activity.

The uterus is a muscular organ and is therefore subject to constant contraction and relaxation. The tense state of the uterus is especially pronounced during pregnancy and during childbirth. This state is called tone. Almost every third pregnancy is accompanied by such tension. But are only pregnant women susceptible to this condition? Why is the uterus tense? Can there be uterine tone without pregnancy?

State of tone in the absence of pregnancy

In its structure, the female uterus acts as a hollow organ covered with muscles. It is represented by three layers: the outer (perimetry), the middle (endometrium - the lining of the uterus) and the muscular layer itself (myometrium). Muscle fibers are arranged in different orders. For example, in the inner layer - in a circle, in the outer layer - vertically, and in the middle - in a spiral. The work of these fibers directly depends on the nervous system and hormonal influences. The uterine muscles tend to be in constant motion - contracting and relaxing.

This is interesting! Normally, the muscle layer of the reproductive organ of a non-pregnant woman should be at rest. Prolonged tone indicates gynecological problems. In European countries, non-pregnant women with this phenomenon do not receive any medical care. Uterine tone here is considered a completely common occurrence that does not in any way affect women’s health. In Russia, on the contrary, doctors try to determine the causes of tension with maximum accuracy and prescribe optimal treatment.

Causes

Uterine tone not during pregnancy is usually caused by the following reasons:

  • Premenstrual period. Uterine tone before menstruation is a fairly common occurrence. The epithelium of the organ is rejected and muscle contraction occurs. Uterine tone during menstruation is also possible. On critical days, the female body produces progesterone in excess. It promotes fluid retention in the body. At this moment, the main share of nutrients ends up in the uterus. This provokes an enlargement of the uterus and its tone. There is no need to sound the alarm regarding the tone of the uterus during this period. But tension in the uterus after menstruation is a reason to consult a doctor.
  • Endometriosis. This disease can occur due to any surgical intervention (interruptions, abortions, other operations). Typically, menstruation with endometriosis is spotting, quite painful, and brownish in color. The disease is often accompanied by uterine tone.
  • Myoma. A very common disease in which formations are observed in the uterus (most often benign). Women of premenopausal age are especially susceptible to it. Myoma often causes cramping pain before menstruation. The disease is easily treatable with timely diagnosis.

The tone of the reproductive organ is often observed in the presence of fibroids

  • A deficiency, or vice versa - an excess of male hormones in the female body. To eliminate this feature, the woman is prescribed suitable hormones. The lack of male hormones is eliminated by progesterone, while the excess is eliminated by the antipode.
  • Problems with intestinal motility. Increased gas formation causes bloating, colic and constipation. The intestines put pressure on the uterus, forcing it to be in good shape. In addition, problems with the intestines can provoke blood stagnation in the pelvis and clogging the body with its own waste. To avoid this condition, you need to carefully monitor the quality of your diet and lead an active lifestyle.
  • Postpartum tone. Often caused by placental particles remaining in the uterus. In order to find out, a woman needs to undergo an ultrasound. An afterbirth may remain in the case of poor contractility of the uterus, which was unable to independently remove all postpartum residues. It can also be caused by manual separation of the placenta or if the placenta is too tightly attached to the uterus. If the tone is caused precisely by these reasons, the woman needs to undergo cleansing, and then monitor her condition using an ultrasound. Ignoring this situation can lead to serious women's health problems.
  • Problems in the functioning of the central nervous system. The uterus consists of many nerve endings. Stress, overwork, and nervous disorders can worsen the contractility of the organ. For this reason, during times of stress, a woman is often susceptible to painful sensations in the lower abdomen.
  • Taking medications. Certain medications cause uterine tone as a side effect.
  • Psychological aspect. No matter how strange it may sound, a woman herself can cause uterine hypertonicity. Confidence that there really is tension can provoke its appearance in reality.
  • Previous operations on the cervix. The treatment of some diseases requires surgical intervention in the cervix. This procedure is used to eliminate polyps, treat erosions, precancerous conditions and other pathologies. After the intervention, sutures are placed on the neck and a cotton swab is left in the neck for a short period of time. It is necessary to stop postoperative bleeding. The first time after the operation, the patient feels nagging pain in the lower abdomen. This symptom is often accompanied by bloody discharge. All this indicates the presence of tone. This phenomenon is eliminated with anti-inflammatory and painkillers.
  • Tone after intimacy. Orgasm always causes uterine tone, which goes away after a short time. If the organ remains in good shape after sex for a long time, you should immediately consult a specialist.

These reasons for tone cannot be ignored. A woman should consult a doctor for complete medical care.

Attention! By palpating the uterus, the doctor can detect its tone. But this fact in itself is not a basis for such a diagnosis. The organ may become tense during the examination. Therefore, to accurately determine the fact of tone, you should undergo an ultrasound.

In addition to a gynecological examination and ultrasound, the level of uterine tension can be determined using a tonuometry procedure using special equipment.

Danger

The degree of negative impact of uterine tone during pregnancy is obvious - it can cause miscarriage. Can it harm the tone of a non-pregnant woman? A toned uterus can cause the following complications:

  • Feeling of general discomfort. This symptom often accompanies a state of tone and to a certain extent affects the woman’s usual way of life.
  • Possibility of liver problems. When feeling discomfort and pain in the lower abdomen, women often take antispasmodics. Their systematic use can lead to liver problems.
  • Problems with conception. A tense uterus, contracting, will not allow pregnancy to occur. And if the fact of conception does occur, the zygote will not be able to gain a foothold in the tense uterine wall.
  • Difficulties in intimate life. Uterine tension causes discomfort during sex. For fear of unpleasant sensations, a woman may avoid intimacy.

Remedies

Patients with increased tone require topical therapy. As a rule, this condition is eliminated with the help of medications.

Important! Only a doctor can prescribe a particular drug. Self-medication can cause unpleasant consequences for the female body.

In matters of relieving uterine tension, the following groups of medications will be relevant:

  • Immunomodulators, antibiotics. Prescribed when inflammatory processes are detected in the uterus. Before taking antibacterial agents, the patient should undergo testing for the sensitivity of microorganisms.
  • Sedatives. Particularly effective in relieving uterine tension in the absence of pregnancy. They help eliminate stress and emotional tension - the main factors of tone. It is worth considering that taking some types of such medications interferes with concentration and the process of driving a car.
  • Antispasmodics. The main effect of such drugs is to relax the reproductive organ before menstruation. They must be taken in the dosage prescribed by the doctor. Such medications may take the form of rectal suppositories, injections, or regular tablets.
  • Progesterone-based drugs. Helps in relaxing the uterus. Some women manage to get pregnant after taking them. These drugs are taken after ovulation.

In parallel with taking medications, doctors prescribe restrictions on physical activity for women. It is also worth leading a measured lifestyle - maintaining a sleep schedule, avoiding overwork and stress. It would be useful to follow a diet and avoid junk food.

Uterine tone is a frequent companion of pregnant women. But it can be present without pregnancy. Usually it is short-lived and the woman practically does not feel it. The situation is completely different when the symptoms of tone are clearly felt. “Petrification” of the lower abdomen, aching or shooting pain in the lower back are mandatory conditions for visiting a doctor and receiving additional recommendations. Usually the condition is quite easily treated with medications and following simple rules.
