The drug "Novopassit" (Novo-passit) is a combination drug that includes guaifenesin and components of plant origin.

The product has a positive effect on the nervous system: it relieves tension, reduces the level of the stress hormone (cortisol), and has an anti-anxiety effect.

Thanks to its combined composition, it has a broad integrated approach with an effective effect against nervous disorders:

Taking the drug helps normalize internal imbalances, restores positive thinking and mental stability, and helps fight fears and worries. The antidepressant has a pronounced sedative effect and is able to remove the state of internal anxiety and tension.

The composition of the medicine includes components of plant origin:

  1. St. John's wort. The plant has anxiolytic and antidepressant properties - it improves mood and reduces anxiety. In addition, it has an immunostimulating, anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic effect.
  2. Hop. It has a calming, analgesic and antihistamine effect.
  3. Hawthorn. It has a beneficial effect on heart rate, blood circulation in the coronary vessels and cerebral vessels, has an antispasmodic effect and reduces psychological excitability.
  4. Melissa. It has a calming, antibacterial, antispasmodic, antiviral and restorative effect.
  5. Black elderberry. It perfectly calms the nervous system and has an analgesic effect.
  6. Passionflower. Normalizes sleep, improves concentration, has analgesic, antispasmodic and anti-anxiety effects.
  7. Valerian. It has the function of mild sedation, normalizes sleep phases and reduces mental stress.
  8. Guaifenesin. A substance that effectively acts on people in a state of constant stress and neurosis.

The main difference between Novo-Passit and synthetic analogues is its non-toxicity and safety in use. With long-term use, the product will not cause you any addiction or dependence.

The product is available in two dosage forms - syrup and tablets. There is a slight difference in the dosages of the components.

Composition and release form of Novo-Passit tablets

Tablets are available in strips of 10 or 30 tablets in cardboard packaging. There are official instructions inside the secondary packaging.

The tablet itself is coated on the outside with a special coating and has a characteristic plant smell. The tablets contain guaifenesin and dry plant extracts.

Composition and release form of Novo-Passit syrup

Unlike tablets, the syrup contains liquid extractants of the same plants.

This dosage form of the drug is intended for internal use. The solution looks like a cloudy liquid with a brownish or red-brown tint and a characteristic odor. After uncorking the bottle, a sediment may form during storage, which disappears when shaken.

The mixture is available in darkened glass bottles of different volumes: 100 ml, 200 ml, 450 ml.

There are official instructions inside the secondary packaging.

Pharmacological action of the drug

Pharmacodynamics. The drug contains pharmacologically active components: guaifenesin and LR extractants, which have a sedative effect.

St. John's wort has antidepressant properties due to inhibition of the reverse synthesis of serotonin and suppression of MAO. Valerian has a hypnotic and sedative effect. It acts on GABA receptors (suppresses neuronal excitability) and opens chloride channels.

An ideally selected composition promotes active interaction between the components and enhances their effect on each other. The sedative effect of herbal components in combination with the relaxing effect of guaifenesin leads to muscle relaxation on smooth muscles.

Pharmacokinetics. Guaifenesin is quickly absorbed into the gastrointestinal tract, broken down in the liver due to the action of glucuronic acid, and leaves the body in the urine as inactive metabolites.

Indications for use

  • neurasthenia in a mild form, which is accompanied by fear, anxiety, irritability and impaired concentration;
  • insomnia;
  • impotence and chronic fatigue, memory impairment of neurotic origin;
  • in complex therapy in the treatment of episodic and acute attacks of headaches and migraines, the etiology of which is the cause of nervous overstrain;
  • vascular disorders (VCD), psychosomatics, neurogenic convulsions, disorders of the innervation of the trigeminal nerve, which lead to facial pain;
  • menopause;
  • complex therapy in the treatment of gastrointestinal tract organs of neurotic origin;
  • dermatoses of a psychosomatic nature (itching, eczema, urticaria).

Contraindications

  • age up to 12 years;
  • muscle weakness caused by pathological agents;
  • individual allergic manifestations to components;
  • liver diseases;
  • alcoholism in chronic form;
  • GM injuries;
  • exacerbation of chronic gastrointestinal diseases.

The drug should not be used if:

During pregnancy and lactation, the drug should be used strictly as prescribed by a doctor.

The drug does not have a hypnotic effect, which makes it possible to take it during the daytime.

The duration of use, frequency and dosage of the drug is selected by a specialist in accordance with the severity of the condition and individual response to the drug.

Overdose

An overdose of the drug has the following manifestations:

First aid for an overdose of Novo-Passit is similar to treatment for acute poisoning. There is no antidote.

Interaction

  1. Guaifenesin. When combined with paracetamol and aspirin, it enhances the effect of analgesics; enhances the therapeutic effect of antiallergic drugs and muscle relaxants.
  2. St. John's wort. When used together with antiviral drugs, it causes resistance and decreased effectiveness; with drugs of glycosides, alkaloid cyclosporine and warfarin - reduces the therapeutic effect of the drugs. Concomitant use with antiepileptic drugs, amitriptyline, phenobarbital and antibiotics is contraindicated.
  3. Passionflower. Use with tranquilizers, barbiturates and sleeping pills is contraindicated. Concomitant use with benzodiazipines, disulfiram and alcohol is not recommended.

Elena

I started taking the drug because of the child’s strong whims (she started to break down). At the same time, due to my nervous state, I had a headache for a week and a half, so I started taking Novopassit. I took it for three days, nausea appeared, I reduced the dose according to the instructions, to half a tablet morning/day - I vomited. And at the same time, the nausea persisted and the headaches did not go away (only the first two days of taking them were not there). In general, I drank them for five days and that’s all. Calmness, of course, came from the first day, but falling asleep became difficult; on the fourth day I couldn’t fall asleep until two in the morning. I don’t know what all this is connected with. The only plus is that the drug coped with the suppression of stress, but everything else... this is of course horror...
