Classification of dog breeds. Differences between FCI and AKC classifications. Dog breeds according to FCI classification Dog breeds fci

AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD

It was not bred in the hills of Australia or New Zealand, but in America. The Pyrenean Shepherds brought here were crossed with various types collie shepherd dogs, as a result a breed was created that received the name. Among the most likely ancestors Australian Shepherd- Border Collie, Collie and Smithfield Collie. became a common working dog on American farms and ranches. Despite its relatively small size, it is capable of controlling a huge flock of sheep or a herd of bulls, biting naughty animals on the hind legs.

Österreichischer Pinscher

The origin of this breed has not been established. Related to the average pinscher. Used more for farm work rather than as pet. Despite its “rural” background, the dog is very polite and smart, suitable for a variety of training. Rarely found outside Austria.

English bulldog

It is believed that English bulldog descended from ancient breeds of mastiffs of Asian blood - fighting dogs brought to England by the Romans. English bulldogs were used for bull baiting. Since the 13th century in England they began to organize dog fighting. In 1835, the cruel custom of baiting bulls with dogs was outlawed in England. The first English Bulldog breed standard was published in 1895, since then the Bulldog has become a “family” dog. English Bulldog - National British breed, which has become a symbol of the English character.

Anatolian Shepherd

Descendant of the most ancient Molossians of Asian origin. The Anatolian Shepherd has long lived in the high plateaus and mountains of Turkey. It was used to guard livestock and protect it from predators (wolves, etc.). Now the Anatolian Karabash performs the functions of guard, herding, hunting and service dog. The breed is popular in England and the USA.

Appenzeller Sennenhund

Appenzeller originated in the canton of Appenzell (north-eastern Switzerland). In one of the early works he was described as follows: “loud-voiced, piebald, a short-haired medium-sized herder.” It is believed that the breed comes from crossing Molossians and northern breeds. As independent breed it was registered in 1898. Max Seaver, a great enthusiast of these dogs, wrote the first standard. The Appenzeller Club was created in 1906. The breed is rare outside of Switzerland.

Classification of dog breeds. Differences between FCI and AKC classifications.

I. Classification by use.

When classified, two main groups of breeds are obtained: hunting and non-hunting.

Hunting breeds dogs, in turn, are divided into hounds, blood hounds, greyhounds (they hunt by sight), pointers and setters (they hunt birds), spaniels (they hunt waterfowl and in the bush), retrievers (they carry shot game), dachshunds And hunting terriers(burrowing), hunting huskies.

TO Not hunting breeds include all others, which in turn are divided into several groups: shepherds (shepherds, mastiffs, huskies), watchdogs (mastiffs, spitz dogs, pinschers and schnauzers), sporting (terriers bred for fighting, sled huskies), decorative ( decorative terriers, spaniels, pinschers, Western and Eastern decorative dogs, some Great Dane dogs (Shar Pei, English and french bulldogs, pug), Italian Greyhound, Dalmatian.). The concepts by which these groups are designated are highly variable and often arbitrary. The origin of these concepts is based on the purposes for which dogs are used.

Dog breeds can also be divided into three groups: hunting, sports, service and decorative(this classification can most often be found in Russian literature).

Hunting are divided into hounds, blood hounds, greyhounds (they hunt by sight), pointers and setters (they hunt birds), spaniels (they hunt waterfowl and in the bush), retrievers (they carry shot game), dachshunds and hunting terriers (burrows) , hunting huskies (hunt fur-bearing animals).

Service-sports- herding dogs (shepherds, mastiffs, huskies), guard dogs (mastiffs, spitz dogs, pinschers and schnauzers), sledding huskies.

Decorative- terriers (bred for fighting), toy terriers, spaniels, pinschers, western and eastern toy dogs, some mastiff dogs (Shar Pei, English and French bulldogs, pugs), Italian greyhound, Dalmatian, poodle.

Another classification can be given based on the fact that For what purposes is a dog used?.

Hunting- used only for hunting, not suitable for sport and as companions due to the strong hunting instinct (Jagdterrier).

Sports and hunting- these are dogs suitable for hunting and sports, they can be good companions, can be used in certain services (for example, to search for drugs) (Labrador Retriever, English Cocker Spaniel).

Service- used only in some kind of service, they are not suitable either as companions or for sport, mainly due to increased aggressiveness towards people (Caucasian, Central Asian shepherd dogs).

Sports and service- can be used on various special services and for sports, as well as as companions (Rottweiler, Airedale Terrier, Collie).

Sports and decorative- decorative dogs that can be used as companions and for participation in competitions (poodle, sheltie, miniature schnauzer).

Indoor decorative- dogs that require home maintenance and careful care are unlikely to be suitable for sports competitions and as companions (English bulldog).

AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD

It was not bred in the hills of Australia or New Zealand, but in America. The Pyrenean Shepherd Dogs brought here were crossed with various types of Collie Sheepdogs, resulting in the creation of a breed called .

Bouvier des Ardennes

One of the surviving Belgian breeds herding dogs It comes from dogs, which gave rise to Bouvier des Flandres, which is more popular and also now extinct Bouvier Ruler, Morman and Pare. Called Bouviers (Bouviers), these breeds are closely related and can be considered varieties of essentially the same Belgian breed. , which is not at all similar to its brother from Flanders, very rare breed these days and even in its homeland is close to extinction.

Some dog experts believe that the Bouvier des Ardennes is the result of crossing the Belgian and Picardy Shepherds. Others believe that it is a local breed, presumably bred in the 18th century by crossing several local shepherd breeds.

Australian Cattle Dog
