    Botanical description

Marigolds are classified as annuals and perennial plants(depending on the species) from the Asteraceae family. They can reach a height of 120 cm, but Chernobrivtsi from a flower bed do not exceed 20–25 cm in stem length. Botanical description:

    • The stem is straight, strongly branches, forming a medium-sized but lush bush.
    • The leaves of the plant are pinnately divided, with small, frequent teeth and pronounced glands.
    • Basket-type inflorescences, with small double petals. Color - from yellow to dark brown.
    • The fruit is an achene, strongly flattened.

      Other names: Chernobrivtsy, marigold.

Marigolds bloom from June until frost. The smell is similar to all representatives of the Astrov family.

Despite its prevalence in Russia and the CIS countries, Chernobrivtsy come from America. There they were found everywhere, from New Mexico to southern Argentina. But in the 16th century, this plant was brought to Europe by conquistadors, from where it spread to the east, becoming popular in the gardens of many countries.

The great advantage of marigolds is the simple and quick care. They do not require much attention or special soil and are drought-resistant. This plant is ideal for beginners in gardening.

      Landing

This can be done in two ways: you can immediately sow it in open ground, or, to speed up flowering somewhat, use self-created seedlings.

The first method is recommended to be practiced when the threat of possible night frosts has completely passed - in late March-early April. Despite their resistance to temperature changes, young shoots should not be subjected to such stress. They are sown in furrows on loosened soil, 1.5-2 cm deep; the seeds should be placed at a short distance from each other (2-3 cm) and laid out in 2-3 pieces. Then sprinkle with a small amount of soil and water carefully so as not to wash out the seedlings. Marigolds bloom 1.5–2 months after sowing.

The second method is also convenient and easy to implement at home. Optimal time- early March, then flowering will begin by May. Sow marigolds in small plastic boxes or cups. Any soil will do, even garden soil. To create the most favorable conditions It is recommended to add a little sand and peat to it, and then start planting. A groove is created in the soil, about 1 cm deep. The seeds are planted at a distance of 2–3 cm from each other, sprinkled with earth, and watered. Shoots appear in 2–4 days if you provide them normal temperature, up to 25 degrees, and direct access sun rays(for this it is recommended to place the box on a warm windowsill).

As soon as 2-3 full-fledged leaves are formed, the seedlings should be transplanted into larger cups, deepening each shoot to the cotyledons to form additional branches of the root system.

After 2–3 weeks, you can plant the seedlings in open ground or in balcony containers.

      Care

Marigolds are undemanding plants, but if you want to get a strong and beautiful flower, it is important to adhere to a number of necessary conditions:

      • Watering should be intensive only during growth, after which it should be reduced, provided there is no extreme heat. It is recommended to carry out this procedure every day. On particularly dry days, marigolds take up moisture well in the evenings. But do not overdo it, otherwise the rhizome will rot.
      • Feeding is not necessary, but Chernobrivets respond well to it. The ideal option is complex fertilizers 3 times during the growing season: when the seedling reaches a height of 10 cm, the appearance of the first buds and immediately before flowering.
      • A prerequisite is loose soil, since the rhizome needs to breathe. It is necessary to systematically remove weeds and thin out excessively dense bushes. During flowering, you can prune - this will make the marigolds grow even larger and the bushes will become more luxuriant. It is important to remove dried inflorescences - this will enhance flowering and make the plant even brighter.

      Pests and diseases

An important property of marigolds is their ability to resist fungal diseases. This is due to the specific aroma and substance that the root system releases into the soil. Therefore, it is recommended to frame the entire bed with blackbrows to protect all the plants in the flowerbed.

Possible diseases or pests appear only if the basic rules of flower care are not followed.

Spider mites appear when there is insufficient watering when the soil dries out, but this problem can be easily solved if you regularly spray and water the plant.
