Still healing agent used as an analgesic, has a bactericidal and anti-inflammatory effect, a general strengthening and tonic effect, increases blood pressure, helps with peptic ulcers, burns, frostbite, and various diseases of internal organs.

How is propolis formed?

Bees are the oldest inhabitants of the planet. They appeared approximately 60-65 million years ago. Bee products play a significant role in maintaining human health.

Scientists have not come to a common point on how bees make propolis.

According to one theory, bees produce a useful product from a mixture of pollen grains and water. The swollen grains serve as a source of food for larvae and young bees. The bees mix the regurgitated balm formed from pollen grains with wax. The mixture moistened with saliva - ready-made propolis - is used to improve the hive.

Other scientists believe that the raw material for the useful product is resin from the buds of birch, alder, poplar, willow, spruce, fir, oak, elm, plum, and sunflower. The resinous part of the buds brought by worker bees inside the hive is kneaded and mixed with pollen and saliva.

The resulting substance helps bees cope with damage from various microorganisms, viruses, fungi, and putrefactive bacteria.

Propolis is used to polish the cells of honeycombs in which brood is grown, it is used to seal cracks, and to disinfect dead larvae before removing them from the hive.

Bees sting mice and snakes that accidentally enter the hive. Coating corpses with propolis suppresses the formation of rotting and decomposition products.

How to check product quality

In warm weather, propolis extracted from the hive is easily kneaded with your fingers. It is scraped off the frames, formed into lumps of 100-150 g and stored in a dark, cool place for up to 5 years.

The fresh waxy mass is quite elastic, the color varies from dark green to gray or black-green. The result of the vital activity of bees smells of resin, honey, pine needles, and over time the aroma disappears. Good for health During storage, the product becomes dark, almost black.

The taste is bitter, burning. When burned, the aroma of incense is felt. The resinous substance dissolves well in alcohol and acetic acid.

Propolis melts at a temperature of 80–103C, and crumbles when cooled below 15C. When boiled even for an hour, the substance retains medicinal properties. To separate foreign impurities, it is sometimes melted in a water bath.

If a ball placed in water goes to the bottom, it contains a minimum of foreign impurities, which speaks in favor of the quality of the finished product.

Therapeutic uses of propolis

The most effective bee product destroys microbes. His therapeutic effect inferior to antibiotics, but less toxic and does not suppress intestinal microflora.
